Match Report
Rothermel and Duvvuri Star as U13 Scorchers Chase Down 139 at Goring
Sonning U13 Scorchers produced a commanding run chase to defeat Goring in the BYCL Under 13 Blast North West league on 1st June, overhauling a target of 139 with more than two overs to spare and five wickets in hand.
Goring, having won the toss and elected to bat, found themselves in early difficulty as the Scorchers' bowling attack applied consistent pressure. Captain Joseph Dineen fell for 9, caught by Siddharth Kumar off the bowling of Shubh Vedalankar, ending an opening stand of 29. Harry Simpson contributed a brisk 4 from 4 balls before being bowled by Eshan Wang Kumar, and when captain Ibrahim Ali Mir trapped Benedict Houlihan-Smith lbw for 12, Goring had slipped to 56 for 3. Tejus Maddi then produced an outstanding spell of 3-1-6-1, including a maiden over, removing Samuel James to leave the hosts wobbling at 62 for 4.
Elliott Rhind provided the most significant resistance for Goring, striking five fours in an aggressive 23 from 18 balls before being caught by Namit Desai off Joseph Dowse. Dowse finished with excellent figures of 2-16 from his two overs, while Arnav Duvvuri delivered a devastating late burst, bowling both Noah Coleman and Ludo Covey in quick succession to claim 2-14. Leo Kennedy's unbeaten 18 from 23 balls and Freddie Wardle's 5 not out added some late respectability, but the 50 extras conceded — including 21 wides and 20 byes — inflated Goring's total to 138 for 8 from their 20 overs.
George Rothermel ensured the chase began at a blistering pace, tearing into the Goring attack from the first over. Opening alongside Joseph Dowse, Rothermel smashed five fours and a six in a scintillating 34 from just 21 deliveries, setting the tone for the entire innings. The opening pair put on a commanding 73 for the first wicket, effectively taking the game away from Goring before Dowse fell caught by Freddie Wardle off Benedict Houlihan-Smith for a well-made 11.
Arnav Duvvuri then continued the assault, matching Rothermel's brilliance with an outstanding 33 from 22 balls, lacing seven boundaries in an innings of superb timing and placement. Both Rothermel and Duvvuri retired not out having reached their milestones, a mark of their dominance against a Goring attack that struggled for consistency, conceding 32 extras including 22 wides.
The Scorchers did endure a brief wobble in mid-innings as Ludo Covey and Houlihan-Smith combined to take four quick wickets. Ali Mir fell lbw to Covey for 7, Vedalankar was bowled first ball by the same bowler, and Tejus Maddi was cleaned up by Houlihan-Smith for a duck, leaving Sonning at 81 for 4 with the match momentarily in the balance.
Siddharth Kumar steadied matters with a composed unbeaten 18 from 27 balls, finding the boundary four times during a crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 54 with Namit Desai. Although Desai was unable to score during his stay of 11 balls before being run out by Samuel James, his occupation of the crease allowed Kumar to chip away at the target. Eshan Wang Kumar then struck a four from his only delivery to seal the victory, the Scorchers reaching 139 for 5 in 17.5 overs. George Rothermel's outstanding opening salvo and the ten bowlers used by captain Ali Mir underlined a comprehensive all-round team performance.
