U9 Kestrels Claim Victory in Intra-Club Friendly Against Falcons
Sonning CC's U9 Kestrels secured a 10-run victory over their U9 Falcons counterparts in a pairs format friendly at King George's Field on 12 July 2023. Captain Lewis Towner led from the front with an excellent 23 off 13 balls as the Kestrels posted 86 for 6 from their 12 overs before restricting the Falcons to 76 for 6 in reply.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Kestrels made a steady start through the opening pair of Jonathan Turner and William Gates. Turner contributed 7 from his 12 deliveries, but Gates found runs harder to come by, finishing without scoring from his 12 balls as the Falcons' bowlers kept things tight early on.
The momentum shifted decisively when Towner strode to the crease. The Kestrels skipper played with real authority, striking four boundaries in a fluent knock of 23 that formed the backbone of the innings. He found a willing partner in Ethan Cawsey, who chipped in with a brisk 13 off 11 balls, including three fours of his own. The pair punished Seve Horton's overs particularly severely, with the Falcons bowler conceding 22 runs from his two overs. Nelisha Widanapathirana added 3 and Suraj Iyer scored 2 as the Kestrels reached a competitive total, bolstered by 68 extras including 30 penalty runs.
For the Falcons' bowling attack, captain Aryaansh Rawat was the pick, conceding just 8 runs from his two overs while claiming a wicket, while Oscar Williams was similarly economical with figures of 2-0-7-0. Jasper Hawkins was the only other bowler to take a wicket, finishing with 1 for 16.
The Falcons' reply got off to a promising start thanks to Oscar Williams, who top-scored for his side with an enterprising 19 off just 11 balls, including two boundaries. However, the Kestrels' bowling unit applied consistent pressure across all six bowlers to keep the scoring rate in check.
Jonathan Turner was the standout performer with the ball for the Kestrels, returning excellent figures of 2 for 11 from his two overs without conceding a single wide — a remarkable achievement at this age group. His two wickets proved crucial in disrupting the Falcons' batting rhythm. William Gates chipped in with 1 for 12, while Suraj Iyer and Ethan Cawsey each claimed a wicket apiece, conceding 7 and 9 runs respectively from their two-over spells.
Aryaansh Rawat battled well for the Falcons with 14 off 11 balls, and Seve Horton contributed 6, but with Rudra Dagar dismissed three times without scoring in the pairs format, the required run rate climbed steadily beyond reach. Despite 62 extras bolstering their total — including 30 penalty runs and 25 wides — the Falcons fell 10 runs short, giving the Kestrels a well-deserved victory built on Towner's batting and Turner's all-round contribution.
