Spartans Struggle in Run Chase as Finchampstead Cruise to Comfortable Victory

The U15 Spartans travelled to Finchampstead Park on 12th August for a BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge fixture and found themselves on the wrong end of a comprehensive defeat, bowled out for 65 in pursuit of Finchampstead's imposing 139 for 2.

Finchampstead captain Carter Grady won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that proved fully justified as his side's top order made hay against the Spartans' bowling attack. Opener Sandeep Cheema fell early for 5, bowled by Arya Maheshwaran, but that was a rare moment of joy for the visitors. Rory Fenn anchored the innings with a composed 30 from 28 balls, striking four boundaries before retiring not out, while Troy Navetta provided early impetus with a blistering 13 off just 6 deliveries, including three fours, before being caught by Marcus Hawkins off the bowling of Elias Haidari.

Cameron Black was the standout performer with the bat, accumulating 33 from 37 balls with seven fours in a patient knock that formed the backbone of the innings. He too retired not out, allowing David Swanepoel (10 off 7) and skipper Grady (14 off 11) to come in and maintain the scoring rate through the closing overs. Extras proved costly for the Spartans, with 34 runs conceded — 25 of which came from wides — significantly inflating the total.

Partha Pal was the most economical of the Spartans bowlers, returning tidy figures of 2-0-7-0, while Pranoy Ramankandath bowled a disciplined two overs for 11 runs without a wide. Haidari claimed 1 for 23 and Maheshwaran took 1 for 29, but the remaining bowlers were expensive, with Rinchhen Lama conceding 30 runs from three overs including nine wides.

The Spartans' reply got off to the worst possible start when Pranoy Ramankandath was run out by Carter Grady without facing a ball, dismissed for a diamond duck with the score on just 2. Lama fell shortly after for 5, caught by Troy Navetta off Liam Mcgregor, leaving the visitors 15 for 2 and already under significant pressure.

Captain Hawkins battled gamely but could manage only 3 from 15 balls before being run out by Grady — one of three run-outs the Finchampstead skipper was involved in during the innings. Sanvik Myadam contributed 5 before also falling to a Grady run-out at 42 for 4. Muhammad Shah showed the most resistance of any Spartans batsman, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 16 from 30 deliveries with three boundaries, but he ran out of partners as wickets tumbled around him.

Aaron Gatha proved devastating with the ball for Finchampstead, returning outstanding figures of 2 for 4 from two overs including a maiden, with both of his victims — Maheshwaran and Haidari — caught by Navetta. Sandeep Cheema then wrapped up the tail in clinical fashion, bowling Nicholas Jones and Partha Pal in quick succession to finish with 2 for 4 from just five deliveries. The Spartans were dismissed for 65 in 12.5 overs, falling 74 runs short of their target in a chastening evening at Finchampstead Park.
