Match Report

Jones's Magnificent Century Not Enough as Stonor Chase Down 220 at Knowl Hill

Sonning Sunday 1s posted an imposing 219 for 4 from their 35 overs after winning the toss at Knowl Hill, but a stunning opening partnership of 178 from Stonor's reply proved decisive as the visitors chased down the target with seven wickets in hand and four balls to spare in this friendly encounter on 14th June.

Captain Richard Skeil led from the front, opening the batting and striking a fluent 52 from just 43 balls, cracking seven fours and two sixes in an aggressive display at the top of the order. He shared a productive opening stand of 60 with Aahaan Sharma, who contributed 7 before falling bowled to Matt Swinburne Johnson. Skeil departed shortly after for a caught dismissal off Niru, bringing Sonning's score to 61 for 2 and momentarily checking the hosts' momentum.

Robert Jones then produced the innings of the match — a breathtaking 101 not out from only 67 deliveries, studded with 13 fours and four sixes. Jones dominated from the moment he arrived at the crease, putting together a crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 76 with Neil Jasti, who played an accomplished supporting role with 34 from 33 balls including four boundaries. Jones eventually retired not out with his century secured, having carried Sonning's innings on his shoulders after the early wobble.

Miguel Taylor was the pick of the Stonor attack, claiming 2 for 39 from his seven overs, including the wickets of Daniel Parks for a duck and Jasti. Edward Duvall (15 not out) and Yusuf Malik (4 not out) saw out the remaining overs as Sonning set what appeared a challenging target of 220.

The complexion of the match changed dramatically in Stonor's reply, however, as openers Will Symons and Niru put together a remarkable stand of 178 that effectively took the game away from Sonning. Symons anchored the chase with a patient 85 from 110 balls, striking ten fours in a composed innings, while Niru was the more aggressive partner, smashing 82 from 69 deliveries with eleven fours and two sixes. The pair batted with increasing authority as Sonning's nine-man bowling attack struggled to make inroads.

Sonning's bowling discipline was undermined by 27 extras, including 17 wides, which proved costly in such a tight contest. Idris Malik conceded 38 from his four overs with four wides, while Edward Duvall went for 29 from just two overs. Kishan Akula was the most economical of the early bowlers, conceding just 17 from his four overs, but wickets remained elusive.

The breakthrough finally came when Aahaan Sharma had Niru caught — by Sharma himself — to end the marathon opening partnership at 178. Jones, the batting hero, then struck twice in quick succession, bowling Symons and trapping Gerard Bowers lbw for a golden duck to briefly raise Sonning hopes at 208 for 3. But with the target so close, Noel Williams (19 not out) and Miguel Taylor (8 not out) calmly steered Stonor home in the 35th over, completing a seven-wicket victory and ensuring that Jones's superb century ultimately went in vain.
