Sharks Cruise to Comfortable Victory as Bowlers and Batsmen Combine in Clinical Display

Sonning U13 Sharks produced a polished all-round performance to see off Emmbrook & Bearwood in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge fixture on 22 June, chasing down 122 with nearly four overs to spare and losing just two wickets in the process.

Captain Charlie Bright won the toss and elected to field, a decision vindicated by an outstanding collective bowling effort. Elias Haidari set the tone early, removing opener Tejas Tandon for 9 before having opposition skipper Aryav Gupta caught by Bright for just 3, finishing with excellent figures of 2-7 from his two overs. At 20-2, Emmbrook & Bearwood were under immediate pressure, but Aneesh Malavathu and Arush Rai steadied the ship with a 50-run third-wicket partnership that proved the backbone of their innings. Malavathu was the pick of the visitors' batsmen, striking four boundaries in an enterprising 24 from 27 balls before Jamie Dollinger bowled him to end the stand.

Rai had battled patiently for his 15 from 29 deliveries but was run out shortly after Malavathu's departure, and the middle order then collapsed spectacularly. Henry Bright delivered a devastating spell of 2-1 from two overs, including a maiden, bowling Ewan Dawkes for 4 and George Mason for a duck. Elijah Patel was equally miserly, conceding just 2 runs from his two overs — which also included a maiden — while trapping Monty Humphrey in front, caught behind by wicketkeeper Henry Verrier Jones. Vedanth Subramanian then removed Oniesh Raje first ball to leave the visitors reeling at 83-8.

A spirited ninth-wicket stand of 38 between Sammy Rao (11 not out) and Aryaman Dhall (10) gave the Emmbrook & Bearwood total some respectability, before Frederick Parkes had Dhall caught by Sibikumar Muthukumaran to wrap up the innings at 121-9 from their 20 overs. The 45 extras, including 25 wides, inflated the total beyond what the batsmen alone would have managed, with only 76 runs coming from the bat.

The Sharks' reply began in commanding fashion. Henry Verrier Jones and Muhammad Shah put on 52 for the opening wicket, laying a solid foundation that effectively took the game away from the visitors. Verrier Jones was the more fluent of the two, cracking three fours in his 18 from 23 balls before being bowled by Oniesh Raje. Shah anchored the innings with a patient 18 from 37 deliveries, hitting three boundaries of his own before retiring not out.

Jamie Dollinger then provided the fireworks, blazing 30 from just 16 balls in an innings that included four fours and a towering six. His aggressive intent pushed the run rate well ahead of the required target, and although Charlie Bright fell for 1 — bowled by George Mason — there was never any real danger of the Sharks faltering.

Sibikumar Muthukumaran ensured the job was finished in style, smashing an unbeaten 26 from 17 deliveries with five fours, bringing up the winning runs in the 17th over. The Sharks reached 125-2 from 16.1 overs, securing a comprehensive victory that underlined the depth of talent throughout the squad. All ten Sonning bowlers were used during the first innings, with seven of them picking up at least one wicket or contributing to a dismissal — a true team effort from first ball to last.
