Spartans Fall Just Short as Marlow Edge Tense Two-Run Victory at Knowl Hill
Sonning U13 Spartans suffered a narrow defeat at Knowl Hill on 7th June, falling agonisingly short of Marlow's total of 103 in a BYCL Under 13 Challenge encounter that came down to the final overs. Captain Anay Patel won the toss and elected to field, but despite a disciplined bowling effort and a spirited chase, the Spartans finished on 101 for 5 from their 20 overs.
Marlow's innings was built on contributions across the order, with Digby Connan proving the standout performer. Coming in at number four, Connan struck an unbeaten 26 from 24 balls, finding the boundary three times as he anchored the middle and late overs. Openers Finn Roberts (21 off 30) and Shrey Sharma (11 off 30) provided a steady platform, while Fintan Lough struck a six in his brisk 10 before becoming the only wicket to fall, bowled by Aarib Ansari with the score on 52.
The Spartans shared the bowling duties evenly, with all ten outfield players delivering two overs apiece. Ansari was the pick of the attack, returning excellent figures of 2-0-5-1 to claim the solitary wicket. Abubakar Waseem (2-0-7-0) and Muhammad Jalaluddin Usman (2-0-7-0) also bowled tightly, though 27 wides across the innings proved costly, gifting Marlow a significant portion of their total.
In reply, the Spartans' chase was given an outstanding foundation by opener Archie Jansen and Waseem. Jansen batted with real authority, striking 24 from 30 balls including a four and a six, while Waseem accumulated patiently to reach 19 off his 30 deliveries. Both retired not out having faced their allotted overs, and their efforts ensured the chase remained very much alive.
Waseem proved the glue of the innings, featuring in both of the key partnerships. He shared a 51-run opening stand before Ansari was bowled by Fintan Lough for 2, and then added 23 with captain Patel for the second wicket. Patel contributed a valuable 12 from 21 balls, striking two fours before being caught by Harry Bone off the bowling of Wolfe Malone with the score on 74.
Heet Panchal kept the Spartans in the hunt with an enterprising 11 from 19 balls, twice piercing the boundary, but his run out by Finn Roberts at 92 for 3 shifted the momentum towards Marlow. Leo Ribbens was bowled by Gray Malone for 1, and Ethan Cawsey departed for 3 in unusual fashion, dismissed for hitting the ball twice, leaving the Spartans needing runs that ultimately proved beyond them.
Marlow's bowling attack, like Sonning's, was characterised by shared workloads and plenty of extras, with 28 in total including 20 wides and 8 no-balls. Fintan Lough, Wolfe Malone, and Gray Malone each claimed a wicket to keep the pressure on. With Ashwin Ravichandran (1 not out) and Yuvaansh Sharma unable to find the boundary in the closing overs, the Spartans finished two runs adrift in what proved a frustrating conclusion to an otherwise commendable batting effort.
