Sonning Women Secure Narrow Victory in High-Scoring Pairs Encounter at Steventon

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a hard-fought win away at Steventon on 29th May in their Super 8 Development Group D fixture, despite falling one run short of the hosts' total in conventional terms. Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and elected to field, and her side ultimately took the six league points on offer in this pairs format contest.

Steventon, batting first from a starting score of 200, posted 100 for 4 from their 16 overs. Captain Bobbi Cookson was the standout performer with the bat, striking 20 off 16 balls including two fours, while Evie Taylor contributed a brisk 15 from 14 deliveries. Shaan Southam added a useful 10 off just eight balls lower down the order, ensuring the hosts finished with a competitive total. Extras played a notable role, with 30 added to the Steventon score, 27 of which came from wides.

Melissa Pengraeve was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 15 from her three overs to claim the best analysis of the innings. Grace Phillips took 1 for 23 from her four overs, while Elinor Longridge was impressively economical, conceding just six runs from two overs and picking up a wicket. Sophie Eckley endured a difficult spell, conceding 23 runs from two overs including 15 wides, though the conditions clearly made accuracy a challenge for bowlers on both sides.

In reply, Sonning reached 99 for 3 from their 16 overs, but crucially lost fewer wickets than their hosts in this pairs format, where dismissals carry a five-run penalty deducted from the starting total. Siobhan Davis led the charge at the top of the order with an excellent 21 off 19 balls, finding the boundary four times to set the tone for the chase.

When Davis eventually departed the crease, it was Pengraeve who stepped up once again, this time with the bat. Arriving at number seven, she struck 15 off just 12 deliveries, dispatching three fours in an innings that provided vital momentum. Captain Fleming contributed a steady 6 from 18 balls, anchoring the middle order while wickets fell around her.

Extras proved even more significant in the second innings, with a remarkable 44 runs added — 34 of them wides. Steventon's bowlers struggled for consistency, with Evie Taylor conceding 10 wides in her three overs and both Isla Southam and Annie Hollest leaking six wides apiece from a single over each. Only skipper Cookson managed to maintain any real discipline with the ball, taking the sole Sonning wicket to fall while conceding just 12 runs from her four overs.

The result demonstrated the value of wicket preservation in the pairs format, as Sonning's ability to lose only three wickets compared to Steventon's four proved decisive in what was otherwise an extraordinarily tight contest. Pengraeve's impressive all-round display of 2 for 15 with the ball and 15 with the bat made her the standout performer on the day, while Davis's top-scoring knock gave Sonning the platform they needed to chase down the target.
