Sonning U13 Sharks secured a hard-fought win against Emmbrook & Bearwood at Knowl Hill CC on 4th August, chasing down a target of 100 with three wickets and nearly five overs to spare in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge fixture.

Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and elected to bat, but found themselves under sustained pressure from a disciplined Sonning bowling attack. Yuvaansh Sharma was the standout performer with the ball, claiming three wickets for 13 runs from his two overs, including the key scalps of Petrus Zeeman, captain George Mason — bowled for a golden duck — and Aarohan Mitra in quick succession. His spell triggered a middle-order collapse that saw Emmbrook & Bearwood slide from 40 for 1 to 44 for 5, effectively derailing what had been a promising start built around opener Oniesh Raje.

Raje proved to be a class act, carrying his bat throughout the innings for an unbeaten 30 off 29 balls, striking five fours. He and Prabhav Ganti had put on 25 for the opening wicket before Heet Panchal broke through to have Ganti bowled for 15. Anay Patel chipped in with the wicket of Isla Collins-Lindsay, well caught behind by captain and wicketkeeper Advay Sood, while Vinudi Jayawardana Weerasinghe dismissed Luke Jones and Ethan Cawsey accounted for Edith Miles. Dhruv Reddy Kantigari took two late wickets, including Isabel Smy caught by Sharma for 8, and Jude Alden wrapped up the innings with his first delivery, bowling Arivan Singh as Emmbrook & Bearwood were dismissed for 99 in 16.2 overs.

The Sharks' reply began disastrously. Rayyan Khan Jadoon was bowled by Isabel Smy without scoring in the third over, and Jude Alden was run out by Isla Collins-Lindsay for 5 with the score on 14, leaving Sonning in early trouble at 14 for 2.

What followed was the decisive passage of the match. Dhruv Reddy Kantigari and Heet Panchal steadied the ship with a partnership of 27 for the third wicket, taking the score to 41 before Kantigari fell bowled by George Mason for 7. From that point on, Panchal took control of the chase in imperious fashion. His 33 not out from 29 balls was peppered with seven boundaries, and he formed useful partnerships with every batting partner he joined. His stand of 20 with Anay Patel for the fourth wicket moved Sonning into a commanding position, and even as wickets continued to tumble at the other end, Panchal remained the immovable constant.

Captain Advay Sood contributed a breezy 8 from just 4 balls, including two fours, but was bowled by Smy, who finished with impressive figures of 2 for 3 from her two overs. Divik Gupta and Leo Ribbens both fell without scoring as Emmbrook & Bearwood briefly sensed a way back into the contest, with the Sharks wobbling at 78 for 7. However, Panchal retired not out having done his job, and the lower order saw the chase home. Yuvaansh Sharma held firm with an unbeaten 3, while Ethan Cawsey struck a crisp boundary among his 6 not out from three balls to seal victory in the 16th over.

The 38 extras conceded by Emmbrook & Bearwood — including 22 no-balls — proved costly in the context of a close run chase, effectively gifting Sonning more than a third of their total. Divik Gupta deserved particular mention for his parsimonious spell of 2-0-2-0 with the ball, while the collective effort of nine Sonning bowlers sharing the workload underlined the squad's depth and versatility.
