Sonning 3rd XI Post 204 to Secure Division 8B Victory Over Marlow

Sonning 3rd XI claimed a comfortable win over Marlow at Crowmarsh Gifford Cricket Club on Saturday, defending a total of 204 for 7 with a disciplined bowling display that restricted the visitors to 169 for 6 from their 40 overs.

After Marlow won the toss and opted to field, Sonning's openers Aseem Shafi and Rahul Sood laid a strong platform with a first-wicket partnership of 62. Sood was the more aggressive of the pair, striking six fours and a six in his 33 off 37 balls before falling bowled by Alex Pearce. Shafi continued to anchor the innings, putting on a further 45 for the second wicket with Ankit Sharma, who matched Sood's contribution with 33 off 35 deliveries, his innings peppered with six boundaries. Shafi eventually departed for a well-constructed 39 off 72 balls, bowled by Hessam Raja, having been involved in partnerships worth 107 runs across the top of the order.

Marlow's bowlers fought back through the middle overs as Sonning slipped from 107 for 2 to 135 for 5. Najam Raja was the pick of the visitors' attack, returning figures of 2 for 29 from his eight overs, while Hessam Raja chipped in with 2 for 34. Daniel Edwards was trapped lbw for 7 by Najam Raja, and Hugo Popplewell fell to Hessam Raja for 9, with both wickets falling at the same score.

Captain Shamitha Widanapathirana steadied the ship with an unbeaten 30 off 30 balls, including two fours and two sixes, adding 37 for the sixth wicket with Jameel Ahamed (12) and a brisk 25 for the seventh with Sam Taylor. Taylor's cameo of 15 off just nine balls, ended by a stumping off Stuart Peacock, helped propel Sonning past 200 and ensured the home side had a target well worth defending.

Marlow's reply began poorly when Stuart Peacock, promoted to open, was caught by Sam Taylor off the bowling of Asad Imam for 7, with the score on just 12. Aarav Band and Hessam Raja then rebuilt with a partnership of 52 for the second wicket, before Ethan Towner struck twice to remove Band for 31, caught behind by Ankit Sharma, and then trap Simon Shaw lbw for a duck in quick succession, leaving Marlow at 64 for 3.

Hessam Raja proved the visitors' most significant threat, compiling an excellent 57 off 74 balls with six fours and a six. He shared a crucial stand of 62 with Amaar Raja for the fourth wicket, and for a time the chase appeared within reach. However, once Sam Taylor had Amaar Raja caught by Rahul Sood for 27, and Jack Durrant induced an edge from Hessam Raja that was taken by Asad Imam, Marlow's hopes effectively ended at 138 for 5. A sharp run out by Shamitha Widanapathirana to dismiss Alex Pearce further tightened the screws.

Najam Raja launched a late assault with an unbeaten 20 off 14 balls, including a six, but with too much ground to make up, Marlow finished on 169 for 6, falling 35 runs short of the target. Sonning's five-man bowling attack shared the workload evenly across the 40 overs, with Towner's 2 for 38 the standout figures, while Durrant's economical spell of 1 for 23 from eight overs kept the pressure on throughout.
