Match Report

Zahid's Four-For Wasted as Sonning Batting Collapses at King George's Field

Sonning's 1st XI produced a disciplined bowling display to dismiss Hayes (Middlesex) for 171 at King George's Field, only for their batting line-up to disintegrate for 80 in reply, handing the visitors a comprehensive 91-run victory in Division 1B.

Peter Higginbottom won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting the visitors, a decision that looked shrewd as Danyal Ghazi bowled Joshua Painter for 4 with the score on 12, and Damario Goodman removed Gurinderpal Singh for a brisk 14 six runs later. Hayes were 18 for 2 and struggling for rhythm.

Kiran Bhardwaj and Jasraj Ghrial rebuilt with a stand of 35 for the third wicket, Ghrial the more aggressive of the pair with two sixes in his 18-ball 22. Goodman claimed Bhardwaj for 15 and Max Murphy had Ghrial caught by Ghazi to leave Hayes 69 for 4, but Kunal Roy had already settled in and would prove the difference between the sides.

Roy anchored the innings with a composed 61 from 66 balls, laced with ten boundaries. He added 26 with Harman Momi, who struck 18 before Murphy claimed his second, and then shared the innings' most valuable partnership — 53 for the sixth wicket with captain Prashant Kumar, whose watchful 15 from 36 balls provided the perfect foil. Higginbottom broke that stand with Dhruv Peshkar taking the catch, and from 148 for 6 the innings unravelled.

Mohammed Zahid was the chief architect of the collapse, his 9.3 overs of accurate spin yielding 4 for 26 with three maidens. He bowled Suraj Singh, trapped Daya Singh lbw, had Roy caught by Higginbottom for 61, and then wrapped up the innings by bowling Aarez Asim as Hayes lost their last four wickets for six runs, all out for 171 in 39.3 overs. Goodman's ten-over spell of 2 for 41 and Murphy's 2 for 33 completed a well-shared effort.

The chase never gained traction. Prashant Kumar was outstanding, bowling Dhruv Peshkar with the score on 7 and then removing Alex Mcloughlin, who had battled 22 balls for a single, at 19 for 2. Mohammed Zahid again stood tall, adding 27 for the third wicket with Muhammad Ayub in a stand built on patience rather than strokeplay, but Suraj Singh had Ayub lbw for 10 and, with the score on 50, Kunal Roy accounted for Zahid for a top-scoring 28 from 59 balls, taking the catch off his own bowling.

Amaad Ali offered brief resistance and genuine intent, hammering three fours and a six in a 10-ball 19 before falling to Harman Momi with the total on 71. What followed was near-total surrender: Sonning lost their last four wickets without adding a run from 80 for 6, Higginbottom bowled by Roy, Akash Vasa bowled by Kumar, Max Murphy stumped by Painter off Roy, and Ghazi bowled by Kumar to end the innings on 80 in 32.2 overs.

Kumar's figures of 7.2-3-4-4 were remarkable, conceding barely more than half a run per over, while Roy's 7-4-8-3 capped an all-round afternoon that earned him the match. Sonning did at least secure five bowling bonus points from their work in the field, but Hayes took the 22 available for the win.
