Zahid's Four-Wicket Spell and Top Score the Highlights at King George's Field

Mohammed Zahid marked his 136th appearance for Sonning with the best figures of the afternoon, a spell of 4 for 26 from 9.3 overs that included three maiden overs and ended Hayes' innings, before going on to top score with the bat in a defeat at King George's Field.

Peter Higginbottom won the toss and put the visitors in, and the decision looked a sound one when Hayes lost their opener with only 12 on the board. Joshua Painter and Gurinderpal Singh both fell to the stumps early, and although Kiran Bhardwaj and Jasraj Ghrial added 35 for the third wicket at a brisk clip, the innings never quite escaped Sonning's grip. Ghrial's short, hard-hitting contribution of 22 was the sort of innings that can shift a game, but a wicket always seemed to follow.

The one batter to settle was Kunal Roy, who made 61 from 66 balls and struck ten fours, two thirds of his runs coming in boundaries. He was well supported by Harman Momi and then by the Hayes captain Prashant Kumar, the pair adding 53 for the sixth wicket to take their side to 148. From that point Sonning finished the job with real discipline, four wickets falling for 19 runs as the innings closed on 171 inside 40 overs.

Zahid was central to that, but he was not alone. Damario Goodman got through ten overs for 41 and took two wickets, with two maidens of his own, and Max Murphy also picked up two. Higginbottom's nine overs cost only 32, and Danyal Ghazi took the wicket that broke the third-wicket stand. Between them the Sonning attack kept Hayes to a modest overall run rate of 4.33 on a surface that never made scoring straightforward.

The reply was always going to be a test against bowling of that quality, and Hayes found something special in Prashant Kumar, whose 7.2 overs brought him 4 for 4 with three maidens: figures that would grace any level of the game. Kunal Roy, having made the innings of the match, then bowled seven overs for eight runs and three wickets. Sonning slipped to 7 for 1 and were up against it from there.

Zahid dug in for 28 from 59 balls, the innings of a batter determined to see off the difficult overs, and he shared the day's most productive stand with Muhammad Ayub, 27 for the third wicket to take Sonning to 46. Four wickets then went down for 25 runs, but there was still resistance to admire: Ayub batted 32 balls for his 10, Akash Vasa stayed 20 balls, and Higginbottom occupied the crease for 22 as the innings wore on.

The most eye-catching contribution came from Amaad Ali, who came in and hit 19 from ten deliveries, three fours and a six taking the attack on when few others were able to. Sonning were eventually bowled out for 80 in the 33rd over, Suraj Singh adding two wickets to the excellent work of Kumar and Roy.

There were plenty of individual performances worth taking from the day, not least Zahid's contribution with ball and bat, which also lifted a season that has seen him bowling with increasing effect. As things stand Sonning sit ninth in Division 1B on 219 points.
