Stingers Fall Agonisingly Short in One-Run Thriller at Binfield

Sonning U11 Stingers suffered the cruellest of defeats in the Girls U11 Challenge on 4th May 2023, going down by just a single run to Binfield in a Berkshire Youth Cricket League encounter that was decided by the finest of margins.

Having won the toss, the Stingers elected to field first, backing their bowlers to set up a manageable chase. Binfield, led by captain Hollie Gamble, set about building their innings across the allotted 16 overs. The home side's batting unit contributed steadily throughout, with Abigail Chandler, Arabella Elmes, Anabelle Lamprecht, Palak Jain, and Isabella Staley all playing their part as Binfield posted a total of 74 for 3.

The Sonning bowling attack showed promise, picking up three wickets during the Binfield innings and keeping the scoring rate in check. Restricting the hosts to 74 from their 16 overs gave the Stingers every reason to be confident heading into the run chase, with the target well within reach.

The Stingers began their reply with intent, and as the innings progressed it became clear that this pairs cricket contest would go down to the wire. The young Sonning batters matched Binfield's scoring almost blow for blow, keeping themselves in the hunt throughout the 16 overs.
