Match Report

U9 Kestrels Fall Short as Falcons Claim Victory in Intra-Club Friendly

The U9 Kestrels won the toss and elected to bat on a pleasant evening at King George's Field's Top Pitch, but it was their Sonning CC clubmates, the U9 Falcons, who emerged victorious in this friendly pairs contest on 7th August 2023.

Batting first, the Kestrels posted 89 for 8 from their 15 overs, a total that owed much to a significant extras tally of 74, including 32 wides and 30 penalty runs. Archie Jansen was the standout performer with the bat, top-scoring with 15 off 14 balls, including one crisp boundary. Captain Lewis Towner contributed a valuable 12 from 22 deliveries, also finding the rope once, while William Gates added a handy 8 off 11 balls with a four of his own. Freddie Jansen chipped in with 5, but Oliver Baker endured a difficult time at the crease, managing no runs from 12 balls.

The Falcons' bowling was led impressively by captain Heet Panchal, who claimed three wickets from his two overs while conceding just 8 runs. Edward Edward bowled with excellent control, returning figures of 2 for 2 from two overs, including a maiden — a superb spell for a young cricketer. Alexander Green and Arjun Chirunamala each picked up a wicket apiece, though the Falcons' discipline wavered at times with several bowlers contributing heavily to the wides tally.

In reply, the Falcons reached their target, finishing on 81 for 6 from 16 overs, boosted by an even larger extras total of 84, which included 40 penalty runs and 28 wides. Heet Panchal led from the front with the bat as well, striking 13 off 11 balls with two boundaries to set the tone at the top of the order. Rudra Halai played a steady hand for 9 off 15 deliveries, while Alexander Green contributed a brisk 8 from 9 balls.

The Kestrels' bowling attack had its moments of quality. Archie Jansen was outstanding with the ball, mirroring his batting efforts by conceding just 2 runs from two overs with a maiden and a wicket — the most economical spell of the match. Lewis Towner was similarly tight, returning figures of 0 for 3 from two overs, including a maiden. Sudaksh Bijlwan was the most prolific wicket-taker for the Kestrels, claiming 2 for 15 from three overs, while Izzy Baker also impressed with 2 wickets for 8 runs from two overs.

Despite those individual highlights, the Kestrels struggled to contain the scoring elsewhere. Oliver Baker's two overs went for 17 runs, and Freddie Jansen conceded 11 from his two overs, with both bowlers giving away extras that proved costly. William Gates took one wicket but conceded 15 from his three-over spell.

The Falcons' ability to accumulate runs through extras ultimately proved the difference, as the Kestrels were unable to build enough pressure with the ball to defend their total. It was a match that showcased promising individual performances on both sides, with Archie Jansen's all-round contribution and Heet Panchal's batting and bowling excellence the standout displays of the evening.
