Match Report

Stand in Skipper JJ Harris was disappointed to lose the toss against 3rd placed Aldershot but hoped that with the away side choosing to bowl first, it may give Sonning a good chance to take the maximum 25 points.

The innings did not start well with prolific pasty eater Mark Richards getting out in the first over, but Andy Sumner , having a rare chance to open, and the classy Ian Boyton soon settled things down with a good partnership. When Boyton played on for 26, quickly followed by the dismissal of a strangely out of touch Harris for 8, Sonning were wobbling slightly, but Aussie Wade Johnston came in and batted very well, especially in partnership with Pete Whitmore, after Sumner was out for a well crafted 60. Whitmore started to “Biff the ball to all parts, and after Johnstone was out for 37, Ghulam Abbas came in for a rare chance with a licence to hit the ball hard. He finished unbeaten on 22 and Whitmore was not out for an excellent 60 giving Sonning a good total of 257 for 6.

The Aldershot innings did not start well for Sonning, with the usually very reliable Johnston and Abbas spraying the ball around a bit and the openers, especially Baig hitting the ball well. The introduction of Harvey Grout did not really stem the flow, although he may have been a bit unlucky, and after spinners Boyton and Richard Anderson’s introduction initially slowed the scoring rate down, soon the Aldershot batsmen started to take the attack to them as well. The turning point of the game came whe Harris re-introduced Johnston and Abbas to the attack. They both bowled with pace and accuracy, which the Aldershot batsmen were unable to cope with, and very quickly a game that seemed to be drifting away from Sonning turned into a terrific win. Johnston ended with 6 for 75 and Abbas with 4 for 54.

This was a great win which strengthened Sonning’s grip at the top of the table and continued their run of really good form. Promotion should now be very possible.
