Sabres Fall Short as Sharks Claim Victory in Intra-Club Friendly at Knowl Hill
Sonning U11 Sabres suffered a 26-run defeat to their clubmates the U11 Sharks in a pairs format friendly at Knowl Hill CC on Sunday, with captain Alexander Green's two wickets proving insufficient to contain a well-spread Sharks batting effort.
Having won the toss and elected to field, the Sabres were immediately put under pressure by Jonathan Turner, who struck three boundaries in a brisk 18 off just 11 balls at the top of the Sharks order. Although Seve Horton anchored the other end with a patient 6 from 23 deliveries, runs continued to flow throughout the innings. Zain Baloch contributed a lively 12 off 12 balls with two fours, while captain Ridith Kandadi added 13 from 15 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
The middle and lower order maintained the momentum for the Sharks. Kiyaan Gupta struck 10 off nine balls, and Ranbir Setia was particularly impressive, smashing three fours in his 15 from 15 deliveries. With 56 extras — including 23 wides and 20 byes — swelling the total, the Sharks posted a formidable 144 for 2 from their 20 overs.
Green was the standout bowler for the Sabres, claiming both wickets to fall in figures of 2-10 from three overs, though his eight wides hinted at the general struggles with discipline that plagued the bowling unit. Heet Panchal was the most economical, conceding 16 from three tidy overs without a wide or no-ball. Jovan Purwaha's three overs proved costly, leaking eight no-balls among his 21 runs conceded, while Jude Alden, Alexander Hatchett-Walker, Harry Waite, and Reeva Desai all went at more than six an over.
The Sabres' reply started promisingly as Alexander Hatchett-Walker top-scored with 19 off 20 balls, finding two boundaries, while skipper Green matched him with 17 from 16 deliveries, also including two fours. The pair gave the chase early impetus, but both were dismissed multiple times in the pairs format, costing the Sabres valuable runs through dismissal penalties.
The middle order struggled to maintain the required tempo. Nelisha Widanapathirana managed just 3 from 14 balls, and Reeva Desai could add only 3 from 10. Lewis Towner steadied the innings with 14 off 18 balls, picking up two fours behind the stumps, but it was Heet Panchal who provided the most explosive cameo, blazing four boundaries in his team-high 20 off just 14 deliveries. Jude Alden chipped in with 9, but with Harry Waite managing only 1 from nine balls and Jovan Purwaha contributing 5 from 15, the Sabres fell short on 118 for 8 from 20.3 overs.
The Sharks' bowling was well shared across nine bowlers. Ridith Kandadi was the most incisive, returning outstanding figures of 2-2 from 1.3 overs, while Jonathan Turner and Kiyaan Gupta each took a wicket apiece. Zain Baloch bowled with admirable control, conceding just 5 runs from two overs including a maiden. Ranbir Setia and Elijah Patterson both claimed a wicket each, though they were more expensive with figures of 1-25 and 1-16 respectively. The 40 extras in the Sabres innings, while significant, were considerably fewer than the 56 leaked by their own bowlers, ultimately reflecting the difference between the two sides.
