Match Report

Ahamed's four-for seals a 21-run win at Yateley

Sonning's 3rd XI defended a modest 123 at Sean Devereux Park, bowling Yateley out for 102 to take a 21-run victory built on discipline, patience and a late burst of wickets from Jameel Ahamed.

Anthony McGowan won the toss for the home side and put Sonning in, and the visitors quickly discovered that runs would have to be earned. Wazir Khan and Ahamed saw off the new ball together and put on 20 for the opening wicket, and although Yateley's bowlers kept a tight rein throughout, nobody in the Sonning order was able to break free for long. Matthew Calhoum found three boundaries in his 12 and Prakash Dsouza offered the most fluent batting of the first half of the innings, his 22 including the only six of the day.

James Osment set the tone for Yateley with ten unbroken overs of accuracy, conceding just 23 runs and picking up two wickets, while Ryan Stentiford also claimed a pair and Joseph McGowan bowled economically before returning later. At 80 for 5 Sonning needed someone to give the total substance, and Michael Longridge duly did, striking six fours in a busy 28 that lifted the tempo just when it was required.

His stand of 38 with Mark Lilley, who dug in for a stubborn 41 balls at the other end, was the biggest of the innings and carried Sonning to 118 for 6. Four wickets then went down for five runs and the innings closed on 123, with 19 extras a useful contribution. It looked light, but on a surface where scoring had been hard work all afternoon, it was not obviously beyond defending.

Sonning's bowlers made that judgement look sound from the outset. Shahid Imtiaz trapped Aziz Rahman lbw with the score on 10, and though Joseph McGowan and Anthony McGowan then dug in for 43 together to move Yateley to 53 for 1, the game turned sharply in the middle overs. Anthony McGowan's 21 ended in the hands of a fielder, and with Michael Longridge and Imtiaz operating with real control, the home side slid to 67 for 5.

By the time the seventh wicket fell at 72, Yateley's chase depended almost entirely on Joseph McGowan, who batted right through for an unbeaten 50 and gave his side hope while the lower order added 30 in support. Toby Fitton removed one of them, and Ahamed then returned to finish the job in style, taking four wickets for 13 runs from 7.4 overs of thoroughly miserly bowling to close the innings out on 102.

Longridge's all-round afternoon, 28 with the bat and two for 26 from his full allocation, was matched by Imtiaz's three wickets, but the day belonged to Ahamed, whose spell turned a nervous defence into a comfortable one. On a pitch that gave batters on both sides little, Sonning's willingness to keep bowling straight and hold their catches was the difference between the teams.
