Jayan's Masterful 92 Not Out Anchors Sonning to Comprehensive Victory

Sonning 4th XI produced a dominant all-round display at Waingels College, posting 184 for 3 before bowling out Aldershot for just 63 to secure a convincing victory in their Division 10B encounter on 16th August.

Aldershot won the toss and opted to insert Sonning, a decision that initially appeared vindicated when opening bowler Shobin Sunny ripped through the top order. Sunny produced a superb spell of 7 overs, claiming 3 for 8 with four maidens, removing captain Kabir Dave for 1, Sophie Smith for a patient duck off 18 balls — caught by Shamail Chaudry — and Edward McLoughlin for 4, caught by Stanley Longbottom. Sonning found themselves in early trouble at 14 for 3, and the hosts were staring down the barrel.

What followed was a match-defining partnership between Gaurav Jayan and Sagar Dave that completely turned the contest on its head. Jayan, promoted to open the innings, survived the early carnage and gradually took control with an innings of real substance. His unbeaten 92 from 141 balls was peppered with 16 fours, a display of controlled aggression and intelligent shot selection that the Aldershot attack simply could not contain. Dave provided the perfect foil at the other end, compiling an unbeaten half-century from 76 deliveries, including four boundaries and a six, as the pair batted through the remainder of the innings without being separated.

Aldershot's bowling discipline deteriorated markedly after Sunny's outstanding opening spell. The visitors conceded 37 extras in total, with 25 wides proving particularly costly. Harry Badland's five overs went for 46 runs including 11 wides, while Trafford White conceded 26 from his two overs. The unbroken fourth-wicket stand propelled Sonning from a precarious position to a commanding total of 184 for 3 from their 40 overs.

The Aldershot reply never gained any momentum. Isaac Jenner struck in his opening over to remove captain Purnachandra Rao Jagarlamudi for a duck, bowled without scoring, and from that point the visitors were always behind the rate. Geethika Jyothis was equally impressive from the other end, conceding just 7 runs from 6 overs with 2 maidens while claiming 2 wickets, including the scalps of Chaudry — caught by Elliott Shaw — and White, taken by Dave in the field.

Aldershot collapsed to 28 for 9 as wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Jenner finished with excellent figures of 3 for 10 from his 6 overs, while Arun Raghavendra's miserly spell of 3 overs yielded just a single run and the wicket of Tristan Govender, bowled for a duck. The only resistance came from Eugene Schrikker, whose unbeaten 20 from 43 balls provided some respectability to the scorecard, including three boundaries during a last-wicket stand of 35 with Sunny, who contributed 11.

It was Shaw, however, who delivered the most devastating spell to wrap up proceedings. Brought on as a change bowler, he returned remarkable figures of 4 for 0 from 2.4 overs with 2 maidens, dismissing Mruthyunjaya Kalmath — caught by Dave — along with Longbottom, William Barclay, and finally Sunny, all bowled, to complete the rout. Aldershot were dismissed for 63 in 27.4 overs, handing Sonning a comprehensive 121-run victory and the full 22 league points on offer.
