Match Report

Stingers Secure Comfortable Victory Over Reading Lions in Indoor League Clash

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball claimed a well-deserved win over Reading Lions in the Women's Softball Indoor Division 1, chasing down a target of 43 with relative ease to finish on 51 for 3 from their 12 overs.

Captain Michaela Herrett won the toss and opted to put the hosts in to bat, a decision that proved shrewd as the Stingers' bowling unit kept Reading Lions in check throughout the first innings. The Lions, led by skipper Raenu Babu, could manage only 42 for 5 from their allotted 12 overs, never truly building the momentum needed to post a competitive total.

The Stingers' bowlers shared the wickets around effectively, with five Reading Lions batters dismissed during the innings. Keerthi Thangavelu, Ashwini Chobe, Leeza Tikyani, Uthara Sivaram, and Swathi Vasanth all featured for the hosts, but none were able to forge the substantial partnerships required to set a challenging target on the indoor surface.

With only 43 needed for victory, the Stingers approached their chase with composure. The six-strong squad of Herrett, Nic Blunden, Elizabeth Van Deventer, wicketkeeper Sarah Wonham, Rita Green, and Liz Rhodes worked through the overs steadily, ensuring they stayed ahead of the required rate throughout.

Though three wickets fell during the pursuit, the Stingers never appeared in serious danger of letting the match slip. They surpassed the Lions' total with runs to spare, finishing on 51 — nine runs clear of the opposition's first-innings score — to secure the full four league points.

The Lions, by contrast, picked up just a single point from the fixture. Their bowlers worked hard to claim three wickets but ultimately lacked the runs on the board to exert real pressure on the Sonning batting lineup.

The result marks a positive outing for the Stingers in the Berkshire Cricket Competitions league, with the collective team effort across both disciplines proving the difference on the day.
