Match Report

Stingers Fall Short as Wargrave Prove Too Strong in Girls U11 Challenge

Sonning U11 Stingers travelled to Wargrave on 13th June for a Girls U11 Challenge fixture and, having won the toss and elected to field, were ultimately unable to contain the home side's batting before struggling to mount a meaningful reply with the bat.

Wargrave lost early wickets, slipping to 11 for 2 as Aarohi Tyagi and captain Mia Ho made early inroads with the ball. Tyagi was the standout performer with the ball across the entire match, claiming three wickets from her two overs while conceding just 10 runs. Ho complemented her superbly, picking up two wickets for only five runs off her two overs, despite bowling five wides. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker also chipped in with a tidy spell, taking one wicket for seven runs.

However, a decisive 44-run partnership in the middle order shifted the momentum firmly in Wargrave's favour. Evelyn Norwood top-scored with 18, striking three boundaries, while Florence Parrett contributed a fluent 15 that also included three fours. Their efforts, combined with useful knocks from Tilly Ward (13) and captain Lucy Gupta (13, including one four), propelled Wargrave to a formidable total of 85 for 6 from their 16 overs. The later overs proved costly for Sonning, with Isabella Partridge (0-17) and Jessica Hawkins (0-20) bearing the brunt of the home side's acceleration. Megan Symes bowled an admirably economical two overs, conceding no runs off the bat, though her six extras were a frustration.

Chasing 86 to win, the Stingers found scoring extremely difficult against disciplined Wargrave bowling. Eleanor Hatchett-Walker fell with the score on just three, and though extras flowed freely — 30 in total, including 19 wides and 11 no-balls — the Sonning batters could not capitalise on the loose deliveries. Tilly Ward took two wickets for just two runs, while Evelyn Norwood impressed with the ball as well as the bat, claiming two wickets for two runs from her two overs.

Jessica Hawkins was the lone bright spot with the bat for the Stingers, top-scoring with 16 off 13 balls, including two well-struck fours. Her innings provided a brief glimpse of what might have been, but she lacked support at the other end. No other Sonning batter managed more than three runs, with Megan Symes unable to get off the mark during her 11-ball stay at the crease.

The Stingers were bowled out for 30 in their 16 overs, meaning Wargrave ran out comfortable winners by 55 runs. It was a match defined by that crucial middle-order partnership in the first innings, which took the game away from Sonning despite their excellent early bowling from Tyagi and Ho. The batting order will need to find greater consistency if the Stingers are to be competitive in future Girls U11 Challenge fixtures.
