Match Report

Sonning Sunday As Fall Short Despite Skeil's Brilliance as Purley Post 263

Purley on Thames won the toss and chose to bat at King George's Field on Sunday, and their decision was emphatically vindicated as they posted 263 for 6 from their 35 overs. Sonning's reply of 211 for 6, though spirited, ultimately fell 52 runs short in this friendly fixture.

The visitors' innings was a tale of two halves. Henry Cook struck early and often with the ball for Sonning, claiming three wickets for just 19 runs from his seven overs, including two maidens. He had Ben Hardy caught behind by Joseph Dowse for 3, then bowled Pahirathan Selvaratnam for 8, and moments later had captain Jacob Hearn caught by Dowse for a duck, reducing Purley to 27 for 3. Edward McLoughlin was equally impressive at the other end, returning figures of 2 for 14 from five overs, including two maidens, despite some waywardness with six wides. Between them, they accounted for five of the six wickets to fall.

William Beauchamp steadied the ship with a composed half-century, his 51 from 55 balls featuring ten boundaries. His crucial fourth-wicket stand of 84 with Saffat Sanin, who contributed a brisk 32 from 36 deliveries, transformed the innings from peril to platform. Christopher Dowse eventually broke through, taking the catch off his own bowling to dismiss Steve Musson, but by then Purley had reached 159 for 6 and the damage was about to be done.

Thangaraj Senniappan's arrival at number seven proved devastating. The right-hander unleashed a breathtaking assault, smashing an unbeaten 106 from just 54 balls, an innings laced with ten fours and seven sixes. His onslaught, supported by Barry Carter's unbeaten 21, plundered 104 runs from the final partnership and carried Purley to their imposing total. The Sonning bowlers toiled in the face of the barrage, with Isaac Blakey, Ali Hussaini, Zain Shahid, and Bharat Rathod all going at more than eight runs per over.

Sonning's response began promisingly. Zain Shahid struck five fours in his 25 from 29 balls before being caught by Senniappan off Sandeep Talluri, but not before he and captain Richard Skeil had put on 51 for the opening wicket. Skeil then took charge in spectacular fashion, blazing 57 from 41 balls with eight fours and three sixes, propelling the chase forward at pace. His second-wicket partnership of 70 with Cook took Sonning to 121 before Sam Seville bowled Skeil to halt the momentum.

Cook continued to contribute with the bat as he had with the ball, making 38 from 40 balls including three sixes, but his dismissal — bowled by Sanin — triggered a brief wobble. Bharat Rathod fell to Sanin in the same over for a duck, caught by wicketkeeper Hearn, and suddenly Sonning had slipped from 121 for 2 to 129 for 4 with the required rate climbing steeply.

Philemon Pon and Edward McLoughlin responded with a composed fifth-wicket partnership of 57, keeping Sonning's hopes alive. Pon made 27 from 38 balls before being stumped by Hearn off Musson, while McLoughlin top-scored with a fluent 37 from 41 balls, striking five fours before falling to William Beauchamp. Moksha Suriarachchi (11 not out) and Joseph Dowse (5 not out) saw out the remaining overs, but with the asking rate having spiralled beyond reach, Sonning closed on 211 for 6 — a creditable effort, though never quite enough to overhaul the target set by Senniappan's remarkable century.
