Sonning's Middle-Order Recovery Not Enough as Cove Hold On for Draw

Sonning 1st XI posted 208 for 6 from their 52 overs at Cove Cricket Club on Saturday but were unable to bowl out the hosts, who closed on 177 for 8 in a Division 1B encounter that ended in a draw.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sonning found the going tough in the early exchanges. Captain Peter Higginbottom fell for just 2, caught by Jack Wilson off Tom Robinson, with the score on only 8. Mohammed Zahid offered resistance at number three but could muster only 4 from 44 balls before falling lbw to Chris Farmiloe, and when Muhammad Ayub was caught by Logan Heazlewood off Thomas Redhead for 9, Sonning were wobbling at 58 for 3. Robinson's figures of 10-6-15-1 had been particularly miserly, keeping the visitors' scoring rate firmly in check through the opening period.

The match turned decisively with the arrival of Amaad Ali to join Sid Anilkumar at the crease. The pair constructed a magnificent fifth-wicket partnership of 108 runs that transformed the complexion of the innings. Ali was the chief aggressor, smashing a breathtaking 65 from just 49 deliveries, clearing the boundary four times and finding the rope on five further occasions. He reached his half-century in only 29 balls before eventually falling caught by Wilson off Farmiloe. Anilkumar provided the perfect foil at the other end, compiling an unbeaten 51 from 69 balls laced with seven fours — a patient innings of genuine quality. Opener Alex Mcloughlin had earlier anchored the top order with 51 from 107 balls, his ten boundaries providing the foundation upon which the later acceleration was built.

Farmiloe finished as the pick of the Cove attack with 3 for 48 from his 10 overs, including the prized scalp of Ali. Robinson's remarkable economy — conceding just 15 runs from 10 overs with six maidens — ensured Sonning's early progress was painfully slow, while Redhead and captain Nick Randall chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Chasing 209 to win, Cove lost Max Martin early, caught by wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar off the impressive Damario Goodman for 8. However, Randall and Jack Wilson dug in to construct a crucial second-wicket stand of 83 that kept the hosts firmly in the contest. Wilson looked particularly fluent, striking seven fours in his 49 from 90 balls, while Randall contributed a determined 37 from 96 deliveries.

The complexion shifted again when Sonning struck three times in quick succession. Peter Higginbottom had Randall caught by Goodman, and shortly after, Wilson fell for 49 — also to Higginbottom, caught by Amaad Ali — with Cove slipping from 97 for 1 to 116 for 4. Mohammed Zahid bowled Gavin Sinclair for 8, and when Goodman trapped Thomas Lynch lbw without addition to the score, Cove were reeling at 116 for 5 with the target looking increasingly distant.

Goodman was the standout performer with the ball, returning excellent figures of 4 for 30 from 15 overs, including three maidens. His scalps of Martin, Lynch, Liam Moore and Max Wilson gave Sonning repeated breakthroughs, while Higginbottom's 3 for 67 from 12 overs accounted for the two set batsmen and Farmiloe. Yet with two wickets still required, Thomas Redhead's unbeaten 22 and Logan Heazlewood's composed 15 not out saw Cove to 177 for 8 from 48 overs, denying Sonning what would have been a hard-earned victory. The draw saw Sonning collect 15 points to Cove's 12, with the away side's superior bowling bonus points reflecting just how close they came to completing the job.
