Scorchers Cruise to 49-Run Victory as Ramesh and Meer Shine at The Oratory School
Sonning U11 Scorchers produced an emphatic all-round display to defeat Goring by 49 runs in their U11 League Pool 3 fixture at The Oratory School on 21st June. After winning the toss and electing to bat, captain Musa Meer's side posted a commanding 146 for 7 from their 20 overs before bowling Goring out for 97 in 16.5 overs.
Vivaan Ramesh was the standout performer with the bat, anchoring the Scorchers' innings with an unbeaten 48 from 36 balls, an innings laced with eight boundaries. Ramesh arrived at the crease with the score on 6 for 1 after Seve Horton had been bowled by Felix Boyd, and he remained a constant presence throughout. His partnership of 45 with Jonathan Turner for the second wicket laid the platform, with Turner contributing a fluent 19 from 23 deliveries before falling lbw to Alfie Westrop.
Westrop was the pick of Goring's bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 7 from his two overs, and his dismissal of Alexander Hatchett-Walker for a duck left the Scorchers wobbling momentarily at 51 for 3. A mini-collapse followed as Lewis Towner was caught off Ted Oldham, who then trapped Svarup Huggi lbw in the same over, reducing the visitors to 75 for 5. Zain Baloch departed without scoring in the following over, bowled by Henry Mullock, and the Scorchers found themselves at 85 for 6.
Captain Meer steadied the ship superbly, striking 28 from just 20 balls with six fours before retiring not out. His aggressive approach, combined with a useful 24-run partnership with Towner for the fourth wicket, ensured the momentum shifted back in Sonning's favour. Jacob Garner added a patient 8 from 20 balls, sharing a valuable 31-run stand with Kiyaan Gupta for the seventh wicket as the Scorchers finished strongly. Extras contributed 35 runs, with Goring's attack leaking 14 wides across the innings.
The Goring run chase never truly gained traction as Sonning's opening bowlers struck early and often. Zain Baloch set the tone immediately, having Ted Oldham caught for a duck with the score on just 1, before bowling captain Jonty Roy for 3. Meer was equally devastating with the ball, claiming 2 for 4 from his two overs as he bowled Jamie Bush and Rory Ambridge in quick succession. Kiyaan Gupta chipped in with the wicket of Felix Boyd, and Seve Horton bowled Teddy Houlihan-Smith as Goring slumped to 22 for 7.
Henry Mullock offered spirited resistance from number eight, playing far and away the best innings of Goring's reply. His unbeaten 35 from 31 balls featured six boundaries and was the backbone of a remarkable recovery attempt. Mullock shared a 43-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Albert Henderson, who contributed 16 from 29 balls with two fours of his own, and together they dragged Goring from the depths of 22 for 7 to a more respectable position.
The late fightback ultimately proved insufficient, however, as Alexander Hatchett-Walker bowled Henderson to break the dangerous stand, and Svarup Huggi accounted for Alfie Westrop to end the innings. Goring were bowled out for 97, leaving the Scorchers comfortable winners. It was a fine team effort from Sonning, with nine bowlers used and wickets shared around, complementing the batting heroics of Ramesh and Meer that had set up the victory.
