Match Report

Sonning welcomed Burnham who the week before had skittled Kidmore End for 54 with Waqar Ahmed taking 9-19! Skipper Phillips won the toss and elected to bat, which looked like a good decision as Aussie Ace LJ Brown showed his class to hit some beautiful shots against the star bowler. Phillips kept him out too for a while, but when Duncan Parr came in after the skipper missed a straight one, an excellent partnership ensued until Brown was out to the excellent Bashir, whose final figures of 21.4 overs, taking 4 for 71 were indicative of the amount of turn he was getting. Mark Richards, who has scored so many runs for the club was welcomed back, and having smashed some beautiful shots, then decided to try a reverse sweep and was easily caught. Oh how we have missed the village idiot! Wickets then tumbled with only James Ford and Steve Mankee getting into double figures, and Sonning were dismissed for a competitive 207.

Having seen the ball spin a lot for Burnham, Sonning started with the old ball. However this backfired as Mark Richards first over was smashed for 14 and then 2 sixes were hit off Duncan Parr’s second over. In fact, not much changed when the new ball was taken as M. Ahmed smashed everything to the boundary. When Abbas bowled his opening partner for 6 the score was 64 after only 7 overs. Sonning gradually started to gain a bit of control with Abbas and LJ Brown bowling well, and taking wickets and when skipper Phillips held a good catch to dismiss Ahmed for a brutal 72, it looked like Sonning were cruising to a win. Despite some late order defiance, Abbas and Brown cleaned up the tail, with the Pakistani paceman ending with figures of 5 for 59 from 15 overs and Aussie Thunder taking 3 for 59 from 15.4 overs.

This was a much improved performance and a much needed win!
