Match Report

Zahid's Five-Wicket Haul and Mcloughlin's 78 Steer Sonning to Victory at Finchampstead

Sonning 1st XI produced a commanding all-round display to chase down 234 with six wickets in hand, securing a crucial Division 1B victory away at Finchampstead Park on Saturday. Captain Mohammed Zahid led from the front with a devastating 5-37 from his ten overs before Alex Mcloughlin anchored the run chase with a composed 78.

Finchampstead won the toss and elected to bat, and their top order made Sonning work hard in the opening exchanges. Tommie Predgen was the early aggressor, striking seven fours and two sixes in a fluent 60 from 52 balls. After captain Joe Sheldon fell for 6, bowled by Danyal Ghazi, Predgen and Connor Rees combined for a productive second-wicket partnership worth 74 runs that took the score to 96 and laid a strong platform.

Rees continued to bat positively after Predgen's departure, caught by Damario Goodman off Zahid, making 54 from 57 balls before Xavier Yarde held the catch off Max Murphy's bowling. Matthew Eldridge then took up the mantle with an assured 59 from 58 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries in an innings of genuine quality. His partnership of 66 with Lewis Smith for the fifth wicket pushed the total past 200 and threatened to set Sonning an imposing target.

Zahid, however, turned the match in the closing overs of the Finchampstead innings. Having already accounted for Predgen and Eldridge — the latter stumped by wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar — the Sonning skipper ripped through the lower order, dismissing Paul Stephens (caught Yarde), Liam Amy (caught Muhammad Ayub) and Anthony Parson (caught Peshkar) in quick succession. Murphy also played his part with 2-37, including the prized wicket of Crowhurst lbw for a golden duck, while Goodman's economical 10-2-31-1 applied pressure at the other end. From 209-5, Finchampstead collapsed to 233 all out in 45 overs.

Sonning's reply was built on a superb opening stand of 96 between Mcloughlin and Peshkar. The pair batted with patience and purpose against a varied seven-man bowling attack, taking the sting out of the new ball and ensuring the required rate never climbed beyond reach. Peshkar contributed 43 from 65 balls, striking six fours, before being run out with the score well set.

Mcloughlin continued to accumulate steadily, his 78 from 106 balls featuring twelve fours in an innings that was the backbone of the chase. He added a further 52 with skipper Zahid for the second wicket before falling stumped off Henry Crowhurst. Zahid himself made a handy 32 from 49 balls, ensuring the target remained comfortably within Sonning's grasp, and his third-wicket stand of 40 with Ayub kept the scoreboard ticking.

It was Ayub who provided the fireworks to bring Sonning home. The experienced all-rounder smashed an unbeaten 52 from just 44 balls, clearing the boundary three times in a blistering cameo that took any remaining doubt out of the equation. Lewis Smith was the only Finchampstead bowler to make inroads, claiming 2-41 from his ten overs, but the home attack was largely toothless, with Liam Amy's 11 wides from six overs symptomatic of their struggles for control. Robert Jones saw Sonning home with an unbeaten 4 as they reached 238-4 in 48 overs, completing a six-wicket victory that underlined their credentials in the Division 1B title race.
