Match Report

Sharks Fall Short at The Brakespear Ground Despite Solid Batting Contributions

Sonning U11 Sharks suffered defeat away to Henley Under 11 Lynx at The Brakespear Ground on 19th May in the BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league, with the hosts overcoming a competitive Sharks total in a match where extras played a significant role for both sides.

Henley won the toss and opted to field, and the Sharks set about building a respectable total in their 20 overs. The opening pair of Tanish Sendilkumar (12 off 13 balls, three fours) and Hitesh Kaushik Reddy Karem (13 off 11 balls, three fours) gave Sonning an enterprising start, both batters finding the boundary with regularity and establishing early momentum.

Finley Andrews continued the positive approach in the middle order, striking 11 off 11 deliveries including two fours, before Archie Jansen delivered the standout batting performance of the Sharks' innings. Jansen top-scored with an excellent 17 off 17 balls, lacing three boundaries as he anchored the later overs. Ethan Cawsey chipped in with 7, though the lower order found run-scoring more difficult against tighter Henley bowling. Wilfred Oseman was the pick of the home attack, returning outstanding figures of 3 wickets for just 9 runs from his three overs. The Sharks posted 123 for 4 from their 20 overs, with 47 extras — including 43 wides — inflating the total considerably.

Henley's reply was anchored by Freddie Postlethwaite, who batted with real authority at the top of the order. His 24 off 14 balls, punctuated by three fours, set the tone for the chase and gave the hosts the platform they needed. Wilfred Oseman continued his fine all-round display with 15 off 14 balls, while further down the order Josh Price (14 off 10) and Arjun Nangpal (13 off 14) ensured the scoring rate never dipped.

The Sharks' bowlers worked hard to create opportunities, and Ethan Cawsey was the most effective with the ball, claiming 2 wickets for 15 runs from his two overs. Captain Anay Patel picked up a wicket, as did Tanish Sendilkumar, who bowled tidily with figures of 1 for 12 from two overs without conceding a single wide or no-ball — a commendable effort in age-group cricket. Finley Andrews also contributed a wicket, finishing with 1 for 10 from his two overs.

However, the Sharks were hampered by 46 extras conceded during Henley's innings, including 20 wides and 26 no-balls, which effectively gifted the hosts nearly a third of their total without requiring the bat. Despite taking 7 wickets — a strong collective bowling effort — the volume of extras proved too great a handicap, and Henley ultimately chased down the target to secure the victory and the full 20 league points.

It was a match of fine individual moments for the Sharks, with Jansen's batting, Cawsey's two-wicket haul, and Sendilkumar's disciplined bowling offering genuine encouragement. Reducing the extras tally will be the clear area of focus as the young side continues to develop in this competitive league.
