Match Report

Stingers Fall Just Short as Slough Edge Tight Contest at Eddie Thompson Oval

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball suffered a narrow defeat at home to Slough in their WSB Division 1 encounter on 15th September, losing by just two runs in a pairs format match that hinged on disciplinary bowling and the weight of extras.

Slough won the toss and inserted the Stingers at the Eddie Thompson Oval, and it proved a shrewd decision as their bowlers made early inroads. Nafisa Firyad was the standout performer with the ball, claiming four wickets from her three overs while conceding only nine runs — a remarkable spell that kept the Stingers' scoring in check throughout the middle overs. Aiza Pirzada provided excellent support with two wickets from her two overs at a cost of just seven runs, while captain Jamila Ghori also chipped in with two wickets, albeit at a more expensive rate of 23 from her three overs.

The Stingers' batting was anchored by a superb knock from captain Rita Green, who struck a fluent 23 from just 13 balls, lacing four boundaries in an innings that injected real urgency into the run chase from the number seven position. Frances Howson gave the home side a positive start at the top of the order with 13 off 13 balls, while Hannah Brooks contributed a steady 11 from 14 deliveries and both Sarah Wonham and Katie Barrows added 10 apiece. Despite these contributions, the regular fall of wickets — ten in total across the 16 overs — proved costly, with five-run dismissal penalties eating into the Stingers' starting total. The home side finished on 86 all out, with 17 extras included in their tally.

Slough's reply was built on a collective batting effort rather than any single dominant innings. Shazia Khan top-scored with 12 from 11 balls, including a boundary, while Raabia Akhter struck a brisk 10 from 10 deliveries. Nafisa Firyad backed up her outstanding bowling display with eight runs, and Richa Bhalla matched that contribution from the number seven spot with eight from 14 balls. Crucially, Slough lost only five wickets to Sonning's ten, meaning fewer penalty runs were deducted from their total.

Rita Green was equally influential with the ball for the Stingers, returning figures of 2-10 from her three overs in an economical spell that gave the home side hope. Emily Waterfield also struck twice, though her three overs cost 21 runs. Frances Howson was tidy with 1-13 from three overs, and Michaela Herrett bowled two miserly overs for just five runs, though without a wicket to show for her efforts.

However, extras proved the decisive factor in this tightly fought encounter. While Slough conceded 17 extras when bowling, the Stingers gave away a damaging 25 extras during the Slough innings — including 14 no-balls and 11 wides. Katie Barrows' three overs were particularly costly in this regard, conceding ten no-balls alongside her 19 runs, while Rebecca Malhi's single over leaked nine wides. These 25 extras effectively handed Slough the equivalent of an additional batter's contribution without requiring a shot to be played.

Slough reached 84 for five from their 16 overs, falling two runs short of the Stingers' total on paper but claiming victory thanks to their superior wicket count. The visitors lost five fewer wickets than the home side, translating to a 25-run advantage in dismissal penalties that ultimately proved the difference in this pairs format contest. It was a result that underlined how, in soft ball cricket, discipline with the ball can matter just as much as runs with the bat.
