Robert Jones Anchors Superb Sunday As Chase Against Hurley

Sonning Sunday As secured a five-wicket victory over Hurley at King George's Field on 17th August, chasing down 205 with Robert Jones providing the backbone of the reply with a magnificent unbeaten 94 from 95 balls.

Hurley captain Mo Basharat won the toss and chose to bat on what appeared a decent surface. Openers Clive Williams and Ravi Singh gave the visitors a solid platform, putting on 39 for the first wicket before Neil Jasti bowled Williams for 11. Ravi Singh continued to attack, striking eight fours in his 34 before Robert Jones had him bowled to leave Hurley 61 for 2. Haider-Ali Baig then took centre stage with an aggressive half-century, racing to 52 from just 36 balls with eight fours and two sixes. His dismissal, caught by Freddie Shaw off Christopher Dowse, came at 117 for 5, but not before he had dragged his side into a strong position.

Edward Jones made an immediate impact in his short spell, claiming two wickets in quick succession as Hamzah Zaman and Parvinder Hunjan both fell cheaply, caught by Robert Jones. Joban Singh then counter-attacked brilliantly, smashing 47 from 31 deliveries including five fours and three sixes. His innings lifted Hurley past 170 before Aahaan Sharma bowled him. Dowse finished with excellent figures of 2-25 from six overs with three maidens, while Sharma claimed 2-36 including the lbw of Basharat. A last-wicket stand of 28 between Ajmal Ali (17 not out) and Gurtaj Singh pushed Hurley to 204 all out in 37.5 overs, with Zain Shahid sealing the innings by bowling Gurtaj with his fifth delivery. Elliott Shaw deserved particular mention for a tidy opening spell of 5-2-13-0.

The Sonning chase began briskly as Zain Shahid and skipper Richard Skeil put on 20 in quick time. Shahid fell lbw to Joban Singh for 8, and Skeil followed shortly after for 12, caught by Basharat off Ajmal Ali, leaving Sonning 22 for 2. The early loss of both openers brought Robert Jones to the crease, and what followed was a masterclass in run-chasing.

Jones and Edward Jones steadied the ship with a crucial third-wicket partnership of 74. Edward Jones played the supporting role well, contributing 25 from 39 balls before falling caught by Ravi Singh off Basharat with the score on 96. Jones had reached his fifty from 46 balls and showed no sign of slowing down, peppering the boundary with 13 fours and a six during his stay at the crease.

Alex Mcloughlin provided explosive support in a fourth-wicket stand worth 46 runs. His 31 from just 20 balls, featuring five fours and a six, shifted the momentum firmly in Sonning's favour and took the target well within reach. When Mcloughlin was bowled by Ravi Singh at 142 for 4, the equation was well under control. Alastair Driver then accompanied Jones in a patient fifth-wicket partnership of 50, with Driver occupying the crease for 39 balls while Jones continued to accumulate. Driver's dismissal, bowled by Joban Singh for 9 at 192, brought Aahaan Sharma to the wicket with just 13 needed.

Sharma struck two fours in a breezy unbeaten 8 as Sonning reached their target of 205 in 36.3 overs with five wickets in hand. Jones finished agonisingly short of what would have been a richly deserved century, carrying his bat for 94 not out in a innings that was the clear difference between the two sides. For Hurley, Joban Singh's 2-33 from 7.3 overs represented the best of their bowling, but they were ultimately outgunned by Jones's sustained excellence with the bat.
