Match Report

Kestrels Secure Victory in Tight Contest Against Reading

Sonning U9 Kestrels travelled to Reading on 26th May for a BYCL Under 9 Super 8s South West league fixture and came away with a well-earned victory after captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker won the toss and chose to field first.

Reading's innings got off to a steady start, with Arjun hitting a boundary on his way to 6 off 14 balls at the top of the order. Reesha R top-scored for the home side with 9 runs from 23 deliveries, while skipper H Hassan contributed 6 off just 8 balls, including a four. However, the Reading batters struggled to find consistent scoring, with extras accounting for 60 of their total 87 runs from 16 overs — wides (29) and no-balls (30) proving particularly costly.

The Kestrels' bowling attack shared the workload effectively across seven bowlers. Oliver Baker was the pick of the bunch, claiming 1 for 11 from his three overs with tidy control. Jessica Hawkins also chipped in with a wicket, finishing with figures of 1 for 9 from two overs, while Jovan Purwaha picked up the other wicket despite proving expensive. Suraj Iyer delivered the most economical spell, conceding just 5 runs from his two overs.

Chasing 88 to win, the Kestrels made a composed start through Hatchett-Walker, who scored 5 from 11 balls at the top of the order. The innings was anchored by two standout performances. Jessica Hawkins batted with admirable patience, accumulating 13 runs from 28 deliveries across her time at the crease, rotating the strike effectively and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Jasper Hawkins matched that tally with a brisker 13 from just 10 balls lower down the order, providing crucial impetus when it was needed. Oliver Baker weighed in with a handy 8 off 10 balls, while Jovan Purwaha contributed 6 from 17 deliveries and Savraj Sall added 5 from 7 balls. The Kestrels lost only 3 wickets during their chase, a considerably tidier effort than the 5 Reading lost.

Reading's bowlers found it equally difficult to keep things tight. Arjun conceded 15 runs from a single over, including 10 no-balls, while Charan went for 16 from two overs. H Hassan was the standout with the ball for Reading, returning figures of 1 for 7 from three economical overs, while R Rudra also claimed a wicket with 1 for 8 from two overs. Moksh M was tidy, giving away just 4 from his two overs.

The Kestrels finished on 84 for 3 from their 16 overs, with extras contributing 37 to their cause. Although they fell three runs short of Reading's total, the pairs format and its scoring system — which includes a 5-run penalty for each dismissal deducted from the starting total of 200 — meant that Sonning's superior wicket tally proved decisive. Losing only 3 wickets to Reading's 5 gave the Kestrels a comfortable margin in the final reckoning, sealing a deserved win on the road.
