Rothermel's Stunning 38 Steers Scorchers to Emphatic Victory at Coppid Hall

Sonning U13 Scorchers produced a dominant all-round display to defeat Henley by eight wickets at Prestcold CC on Thursday evening, chasing down a target of 93 with nearly nine overs to spare in this U13 League Pool 8 fixture.

Captain Arnav Duvvuri won the toss and elected to field, a decision that proved inspired as Sonning's bowlers kept Henley under constant pressure throughout their 20 overs. The hosts stumbled early, losing opener Jaxson Mackinnon for a duck, caught by George Rothermel off the bowling of Eshan Wang Kumar, who opened with an excellent spell of 2-9 from his two overs including a maiden. Rothermel then held a second catch to dismiss Rosie Mills for 5, this time off Siddharth Kumar, who finished with impressive figures of 2-13 despite conceding 10 wides.

Henley captain Jethro Kock attempted to counter-attack with a brisk 4 from three balls, including a boundary, but was caught by Siddharth Kumar off Rothermel's bowling to leave the hosts at 5 for 2. Avi Kohli provided the backbone of the Henley innings with a patient 16 not out from 31 deliveries, putting on 31 for the third wicket with Mills to offer some resistance. However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with James Gibbons bowled by Siddharth Kumar for a duck and Alastair Taylor run out by Ibrahim Ali Mir without facing a ball.

Ibrahim Ali Mir made a significant impact with the ball later in the innings, claiming 2-10 from his two overs, including the key wicket of Aadi Bhatt for 8 lbw and bowling Sebastian Jorgensen for 5. Frederick Parkes chipped in with 1-6 from his two overs, dismissing Rufus Clayton caught behind by wicketkeeper Joseph Dowse. Henley were eventually restricted to 92 for 9, with extras contributing a sizeable 46 runs to their total — 29 wides proving a concern for Sonning's attack despite their wicket-taking prowess.

The Scorchers' reply was devastating from the outset. Duvvuri and Rothermel put on 30 for the opening wicket at a rapid rate, with the captain striking a six in his breezy 11 from 11 balls before being bowled by Sebastian Jorgensen. That brought Dowse to the crease, and together with Rothermel the pair constructed the match-defining partnership of 48 runs that effectively sealed the result.

Rothermel was in magnificent touch, striking four boundaries and two sixes in a commanding knock of 38 from just 30 balls before retiring not out. His innings was the centrepiece of the chase and underlined his all-round contribution to the match following his two catches and a wicket earlier in the evening. Dowse complemented him superbly, compiling an unbeaten 18 from 16 deliveries with three fours, maintaining the momentum throughout.

Ibrahim Ali Mir added a useful 5 before being run out by wicketkeeper Jaxson Mackinnon, and Saurav Sivaram struck a boundary in his unbeaten cameo of 4 as the Scorchers reached their target of 96 for 2 in just 11.2 overs. Henley's bowlers struggled to contain the assault, with Jethro Kock conceding 22 from his 2.2 overs and Rosie Mills going for 26 from two overs. It was a comprehensive victory for Sonning, built on disciplined bowling, sharp fielding, and a ruthless batting performance led by the outstanding Rothermel.
