Stingers Cruise to Victory as Howson Leads the Way Against Binfield

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball secured a comfortable victory over Binfield in the Berkshire Women's Softball Indoor 2021 league fixture on 14th November, chasing down a target of 79 with ten runs to spare. Captain Melissa Pengraeve won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that proved astute as the Stingers bowlers kept Binfield in check before the batting line-up completed the job with relative ease.

Binfield's innings was built around two explosive contributions from Karen Dhaliwal and Alison Wade, who struck 26 and 25 respectively. Both players demonstrated serious hitting ability, each clearing the boundary three times for six during their brief but impactful stays at the crease. Dhaliwal was particularly aggressive, scoring her runs from just nine deliveries, while Wade's 25 came off only eight balls, giving the visitors a platform to build upon.

However, the Stingers bowling attack ensured that Binfield's remaining batters could not capitalise on that momentum. Captain Pengraeve was the standout performer with the ball, claiming three wickets from her two overs while conceding just 11 runs. Sudaf Waheed was equally impressive, picking up two wickets for only seven runs in her two-over spell, providing excellent control and penetration. Katie Barrows chipped in with two wickets of her own, albeit at a higher cost of 21 runs, while Frances Howson was the most economical of the attack, returning figures of 1-8 from her two overs. The collective effort restricted Binfield to 78 for 11 from their 12 overs.

The Stingers' reply was anchored by a superb innings from Frances Howson, who continued an excellent all-round display by top-scoring with 31 runs from 16 balls. Howson struck four sixes during her unbeaten knock, setting the tone from the top of the order and ensuring the chase never lost its way. Her aggressive approach put the Binfield bowlers under immediate pressure and gave the Stingers the upper hand from the outset.

Katie Barrows provided valuable support in the middle order, contributing 16 runs from 13 deliveries and finding the boundary once. Sudaf Waheed added nine from eight balls, while Eva Simmons and Rachel McCabe offered useful contributions of seven and six respectively. The Stingers lost only three wickets during the chase, demonstrating composure throughout.

Binfield's bowlers struggled for consistency, conceding 69 extras during the Sonning innings, including 14 wides. Karen Dhaliwal was the most disciplined of the visiting attack, conceding just three runs from her two overs, but she found little support from her teammates. Mel Biggs and Zoe Scott each claimed a wicket but proved expensive, going for 30 and 17 runs respectively from their two-over spells.

The Stingers reached their target of 88 for 3 from their 12 overs, collecting four league points to Binfield's one. Howson's all-round performance of 31 runs and 1-8 with the ball was the decisive contribution, while Pengraeve's three-wicket haul ensured the opposition were never able to post a truly challenging total.
