Spartans Fall Short as Littlewick Green Prove Too Strong at Knowl Hill
Sonning U11 Spartans suffered a 50-run defeat to Littlewick Green in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) Central fixture at Knowl Hill CC on Thursday evening, as the visitors posted a formidable total that the home side were never able to threaten.
Captain Ridith Kandadi won the toss and elected to field, but the Spartans struggled to contain the Littlewick Green batters across their 20 overs. B Appelbee was the standout performer with the bat, striking a brisk 25 from just 12 deliveries to provide late impetus to the innings. At the top of the order, captain Ralph Stone set the tone with 18 off 16 balls, while T Vaughan contributed a busy 15 from nine deliveries batting at number six. A Boreham added 13 and Mason Dries chipped in with 12 off just eight balls as Littlewick Green posted 151 for 7 from their 20 overs.
The Spartans' bowling attack was undermined by a costly extras tally, with 50 runs conceded in wides, no-balls and byes — nearly a third of the opposition's total. Wides alone accounted for 28 runs, while 14 no-balls further swelled the score. Monish Karthik Saimpu proved the most expensive bowler, conceding 29 runs from his two overs, while Reeva Desai (0-23) and Arjun Baradvaj (0-20) also went at a high rate.
There were bright spots with the ball, however. Chloe Dawes delivered the most economical spell of the innings, returning figures of 2-0-5-1 including a maiden over — a commendable effort at any level. Kandadi (2-0-11-1), Ruby Cross (2-0-11-1) and Rudransh Singh (2-0-9-1) each claimed a wicket apiece to share the spoils among the four successful bowlers.
The Spartans' reply of 101 for 15 from 20 overs never gained sufficient momentum against disciplined Littlewick Green bowling. Kandadi top-scored for Sonning with 10 off 12 balls, while Rudransh Singh made a useful 9 from 11 deliveries. Monish Karthik Saimpu showed application late in the innings with 8 off 11 balls, and Arjun Baradvaj contributed 7, but no batter was able to build a substantial innings to put pressure on the target.
Littlewick Green's bowling was led superbly by Freddie Acton, who took 4 wickets from his three overs for just 15 runs — the decisive spell of the match. Ralph Stone was equally miserly, bowling a maiden in his two overs and finishing with impressive figures of 2-1-2-2. T Vaughan (2-20 from three overs) and T Howson (2-12) also made key breakthroughs, while Cillian Shears and A Boreham each added a wicket. B Appelbee, so damaging with the bat, was also tidy with the ball, conceding just three runs from two overs without being hit for a boundary.
The Spartans' innings was further hampered by the loss of 15 wickets, with several batters dismissed multiple times under the pairs format. Arjun Baradvaj was dismissed four times and Lewis Towner three times, with the five-run penalty for each dismissal proving as damaging as the dot balls. While 41 extras offered some relief, it was not enough to bridge the gap against a well-rounded Littlewick Green side who claimed the full 20 league points from the fixture.
