Scorchers Fall Agonisingly Short as Henley Chase Down 95 in Tight Contest
Sonning U11 Scorchers posted a competitive total of 94 for 1 from their 16 overs but were left to rue a spirited Henley chase that saw the home side reach the target with just over three overs to spare in this U11 League Pool 3 fixture on 29 June.
Having been inserted after Henley won the toss and elected to field, the Scorchers set about building a platform through openers Alexander Hatchett-Walker and Ranbir Setia. The pair put on 38 for the first wicket, with Hatchett-Walker striking a fluent 12 from 20 balls, including a well-timed boundary, before being bowled by Toby Wood. Setia anchored his end patiently, accumulating 13 from 25 deliveries before retiring not out to give his teammates an opportunity at the crease.
Oscar Williams injected real momentum into the Sonning innings with a free-scoring 24 from 25 balls, punishing anything short with four boundaries. Williams retired not out, having given the Scorchers a solid foundation to build upon in the closing overs. Vivaan Ramesh then seized the initiative superbly, blazing 21 from just 18 deliveries with three fours in an unbeaten knock that pushed the total past 90. Lewis Towner provided a steady hand at the end, finishing 3 not out as the Scorchers reached 94 for 1, a total bolstered by 21 extras. Wood was the pick of the Henley bowlers, returning impressive figures of 2-0-3-1, including a maiden, while Josh Price was equally economical with 2-0-5-0.
The Henley reply began in explosive fashion through Finn Ellison, who hammered 26 from just 14 balls with five boundaries, racing along at nearly two runs a ball before retiring. Indrajit Nandakumar played the supporting role in an opening stand of 38, matching the Scorchers' first-wicket effort, as the hosts made a blistering start to their chase.
The Scorchers fought back superbly in the middle overs. Arthur Teed struck a crucial blow when he bowled Henley captain Seb Lavers for a duck, and moments later Vivaan Ramesh produced a sharp piece of fielding to run out Freddie Postlethwaite for 2, leaving Henley wobbling at 45 for 2. Captain Anay Patel then took centre stage with the ball, removing the well-set Nandakumar for 14 — caught smartly by Shaurya Gore — before bowling Arjun Nangpal for 4 to claim figures of 2-0-12-2 and give Sonning genuine hope of pulling off a remarkable turnaround.
At 78 for 4, the equation was still in the balance, but Josh Price held his nerve with an unbeaten 19 from 21 balls, finding the boundary at a critical moment. Price and Toby Wood, who chipped in with 5 not out, guided Henley to their target of 95 in the 13th over. The Scorchers' cause was not helped by 25 extras in the Henley innings, including 14 no-balls, which gifted the home side easy runs at crucial junctures.
Despite the defeat, there were plenty of encouraging signs for the Scorchers. The batting displayed real depth with four players reaching double figures, Patel's two-wicket haul demonstrated his value as captain and strike bowler, and the fielding unit showed character in creating chances during the middle overs. Tighter discipline with the ball — particularly in reducing the extras — will be key for the Scorchers as they look to convert competitive totals into victories in the weeks ahead.
