Spartans Fall Short as Pinkneys Green Prove Too Strong at Knowl Hill

Sonning U11 Spartans suffered a defeat at home to Pinkneys Green in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) Central fixture at Knowl Hill CC on 29 July, as the visitors posted a commanding total and then restricted the hosts to 84 for 9 in reply.

Pinkneys Green won the toss and chose to bat first, making excellent use of the opportunity. Jamie Pitcock set the tone at the top of the order with a fluent 26 off 25 balls, striking four boundaries, while Jake Pitcock provided quick-fire support with 8 from just 5 deliveries. Arthur Browning contributed a useful 12 off 13 balls in the middle order, but it was Henry Browning who proved the most destructive, smashing 30 off 20 balls with four fours and a six to propel Pinkneys Green to an imposing 113 for 3 from their 20 overs.

The Spartans' bowling attack found wickets hard to come by. Niko Jordinson was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 for 8 from his two overs — the only Sonning bowler to take a wicket. Zain Baloch was economical, conceding just 3 runs from his two overs, while Megan Symes kept things tight with figures of 2-0-5-0. At the other end, Ranbir Setia bowled a maiden in his spell of 2-1-11-0. However, 25 extras, including 16 byes, proved costly for the home side.

Chasing 114 for victory, captain Alexander Green gave the Spartans a positive start, hitting 13 off 9 balls with three fours before being dismissed twice in his pairs innings. Alexander Hatchett-Walker provided solid support at the top with 10 off 11 balls, and Zain Baloch matched that contribution with 10 from 12 deliveries, including a boundary.

The middle order battled gamely, with Ruby Cross making 8 and Niko Jordinson scoring 7, but regular wickets stalled any momentum. Jake Pitcock was the chief destroyer with the ball for Pinkneys Green, taking 4 wickets from his three overs, including a maiden, while conceding just 11 runs. Henry Browning chipped in with 1 for 4 from two overs, including a maiden, and Arthur Browning also claimed a wicket in a tidy spell of 2-1-3-1.

Lower-order contributions from Jacob Garner (9 off 11 balls), Ranbir Setia (6 off 9) and Rian Gehlot (5 off 7) added some respectability to the scorecard, but the asking rate had climbed beyond reach. The Spartans were eventually restricted to 84 for 9 from their 20 overs, falling 29 runs short of their target.

It was a match in which the Spartans were outgunned with the bat, and despite some disciplined spells from Jordinson, Baloch and Symes, the first-innings total always looked challenging. Pinkneys Green's well-balanced attack, spearheaded by Jake Pitcock's four-wicket haul, ensured they completed a comfortable victory to claim all 20 league points.
