Match Report

Stingers Cruise Past Falkland in WSB Cup with Dominant Chase

The Sonning Stingers Soft Ball side produced a commanding all-round display to defeat Falkland in their WSB Cup encounter at King George's Field on Tuesday evening, chasing down 86 with considerable ease and losing just a single wicket in the process.

Captain Katie Barrows won the toss and opted to insert Falkland, a decision that proved shrewd as the Stingers' bowling attack shared the wickets evenly across six bowlers. Geethika Jyothis set the tone with an economical spell of 2-0-7-1, while Barrows herself was equally tidy, returning figures of 2-0-7-1. Every Stingers bowler who delivered a ball claimed at least one wicket, with Rebecca Malhi (3-0-12-1), Hannah Brooks (3-0-19-1), Nic Blunden (3-0-24-1), and Elinor Longridge (3-0-16-1) all contributing to restrict Falkland to nine dismissals across their 16 overs.

For Falkland, the lower order provided the bulk of the resistance. Rosalie Bartonwood top-scored with 12 from 16 balls, striking two fours, while Alice Lane provided some late impetus with 11 from just nine deliveries, including the only six of the match. Captain Natalie Brown made 8 at the top of the order, but regular wickets and a total of 30 extras — including 16 wides and 14 no-balls — told the story of an innings that never truly built momentum. Falkland finished on 85 for 9.

The Stingers' reply was a model of composure. Liz Rhodes was the standout performer with the bat, striking a brisk 12 from just eight deliveries, finding the boundary rope twice in an innings that gave the chase early impetus. Rebecca Malhi contributed a steady 10 from 14 balls, while Geethika Jyothis matched that tally with 10 from nine, including two fours, to cap off an impressive all-round evening.

Contributions came from throughout the order, with Longridge (8), Barrows (8), Blunden (5), and Brooks (5) all spending time at the crease. The Stingers were greatly assisted by 40 extras conceded by the Falkland attack, with 28 no-balls proving particularly costly. Rachel Seymour (2-0-12-0) conceded eight no-balls alone, while Zoe Paphitis (2-0-15-0) sent down six.

Alex Wood was the sole Falkland bowler to claim a wicket, dismissing Barrows for 8, but it was a lone bright spot in an otherwise difficult evening with the ball. Captain Natalie Brown bowled tidily, conceding just eight runs from her two overs including a maiden, but it was not enough to stem the flow of runs elsewhere.

The Stingers reached their target of 86 in the 16th over, finishing on 101 for 1 — a comprehensive 16-run victory that underlined the depth of their squad. With bat, ball, and in the field, Sonning's soft ball side demonstrated the quality needed to progress in the cup competition.
