Stingers Fall Nine Runs Short as Slough Claim Victory in Softball League Clash
Sonning Stingers Soft Ball suffered a narrow defeat at home on 24th July, falling short by nine runs as Slough claimed the spoils in this Berkshire Women's Softball Performance – East league fixture. Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and opted to field first, but the Stingers were unable to rein in Slough's batting lineup before finding their own reply come up just short.
Slough's innings was built around strong contributions at the top and bottom of their order. Opener Arfa Saeed set the tone with a brisk 16 from just 13 balls, striking two fours to get the visitors off to a positive start. Although the middle order was kept relatively quiet — Ameena Firyad managing just 2 and Richa Bhalla 4 — useful cameos from Ammara Qureshi (7) and captain Nafisa Firyad (10 off 12 balls) kept the scoreboard ticking over.
The most significant contribution came from Aamna Ahmed, who top-scored with 19 off 16 deliveries, including a four, to propel Slough to a competitive total of 78 for 4 from their 12 overs. Extras also played a notable role, with 26 added to the Slough total, including 15 in penalty runs.
Frances Howson was the pick of the Stingers' bowling attack, claiming the only recorded wicket for Sonning from her two overs while conceding 12 runs. Captain Fleming was economical with figures of 1-0-5-0, while Rebecca Mahli's tidy two overs cost just 10 runs. However, the Stingers struggled to take wickets regularly, with Slough losing only four across the innings, allowing them to accumulate steadily.
In reply, Howson carried her form into the batting innings, top-scoring for the Stingers with 13 off 10 balls, cracking two fours in an enterprising start. Fleming contributed 9 off 10 balls with a boundary, while Siobhan Davis matched that tally with 9 from her 10 deliveries, also finding the rope once.
The lower middle order showed fight, with Rebecca Mahli (7 off 8 balls), Melissa Pengraeve (8 off 7) and wicketkeeper Sarah Wonham (8 off 11) all chipping in. Extras were generous to Sonning as well, totalling 31 — including 20 in penalty runs — but it ultimately proved insufficient. The Stingers finished on 69 for 3 from their 12 overs, nine runs adrift of the target.
For Slough, Ammara Qureshi and Zobia Ahmed were the most impactful with the ball, each claiming a wicket apiece. Qureshi returned figures of 1 for 13 from three overs, while Ahmed conceded 20 from her three but proved dangerous enough to take a scalp. Arfa Saeed was the most economical of the Slough bowlers, going wicketless but conceding just 14 runs in three tidy overs.
Despite the defeat, there were encouraging signs for the Stingers, with contributions spread across the batting order and Howson impressing with both bat and ball. Slough, however, deserved their victory, with Aamna Ahmed's all-round influence and Saeed's consistency with bat and ball proving decisive in a competitive afternoon of softball cricket.
