Match Report

Dellar-Law's Explosive 66 Not Enough as Woodley Chase Down 249 with Ease

Sonning 3rd XI posted a commanding 249 for 6 from their 45 overs at Knowl Hill, but a devastating century from Pranav Desai powered Woodley to victory with more than 13 overs to spare in this Division 7A encounter.

Captain Sam Taylor won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that initially appeared well-founded as openers Elliot Dawes and Aashmit Ghosh set about building a solid platform. The pair put on 65 for the first wicket, with Ghosh the more aggressive of the two, striking eight boundaries in his 45 from 46 balls before falling caught off the bowling of Pranav Desai. Dawes anchored the innings through the middle overs, adding a further 34 with Matthew Dawes for the second wicket before the latter was also caught off Desai for 12.

Elliot Dawes eventually departed for a well-constructed 44 from 77 deliveries, bowled by Rakesh Sriramoju, with the score on 123 for 3. Daniel Parks followed shortly after for 12, also bowled by Sriramoju, and at 133 for 4, Sonning needed someone to accelerate the scoring rate.

That man was Kyle Dellar-Law, who produced a magnificent counter-attacking innings of 66 from just 44 balls. The wicketkeeper-batsman hammered seven fours and four sixes in a display of controlled aggression, putting on 56 for the fifth wicket with Christopher Dowse before the latter was trapped lbw by Ajay Singh for 11. Dellar-Law continued his assault in a 42-run sixth-wicket stand with Ollie Terry before finally falling caught off Sumanth Hathwar. Terry remained unbeaten on 23, including two sixes, as Sonning closed on what appeared a highly competitive total.

The Woodley reply, however, was nothing short of ruthless. Although Sam Taylor removed Mandeep Singh caught for a rapid 26 from 12 balls with the score on 32, what followed was a masterclass from Desai and Hathwar. The pair constructed a colossal second-wicket partnership of 166 runs that utterly dismantled the Sonning bowling attack. Desai was imperious, racing to a stunning 110 from 83 balls, an innings punctuated by an extraordinary 21 boundaries. Hathwar provided excellent support at the other end, compiling a composed 56 from 56 deliveries with five fours and two sixes.

Shahbaz Ali belatedly provided Sonning with some hope, removing Desai stumped by Dellar-Law for his century and then dismissing Debdeep Bhattacharya for a duck in the same over to leave Woodley at 198 for 3. Ali continued to strike, having Hathwar caught by Matthew Dawes and then Bhargava Vasu caught by Elliot Gray, finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 45 from his 6.5 overs. It was a fine individual bowling display, but the damage had already been done.

Rakesh Sriramoju ensured there would be no dramatic collapse, smashing an unbeaten 27 from just 14 balls, including five fours and a six, to guide Woodley past the target in the 32nd over. Despite the defeat, Sonning collected nine bonus points — five for batting and four for bowling — though they will rue a bowling performance that conceded 250 runs in fewer than 32 overs. Ali's four-wicket haul and Dellar-Law's blistering innings with the bat were the standout individual efforts in a match ultimately defined by Desai's breathtaking hundred.
