Match Report
Jones's Brilliant 70 Not Enough as Sonning Fall to Cookham Dean
Sonning Sunday 1s suffered a frustrating defeat at King George's Field on 21 June, posting 194 for 8 from their 35 overs only to see Cookham Dean chase the target down with more than five overs to spare, reaching 195 for 4 in 29.4 overs.
Captain Robert Jones won the toss and elected to bat, and his side made a solid start. Openers Mohit Karangad and Moksha Suriarachchi put on 52 for the first wicket, with Suriarachchi striking six fours in a brisk 26 from 35 balls before falling caught off Max Rowson. Karangad continued steadily to 30 from 44 deliveries, finding the boundary five times before Hadi Mohammed ended his stay.
Jones then took centre stage with a commanding innings of 70 from just 39 balls, lacing 13 fours in an exhibition of strokeplay that threatened to push Sonning well beyond 200. He shared a productive fourth-wicket stand of 64 with Christopher Dowse, who contributed an accomplished 30 from 41 balls with six boundaries of his own. At 165 for 4, Sonning looked well set for a substantial total.
The innings, however, lost its way dramatically in the closing overs. Guy Donald struck twice in his three-over spell, conceding just 12 runs, while captain Mark Pateman was devastating with figures of 2 for 2 from two overs. From 165 for 4, Sonning slumped to 182 for 8 as the lower order crumbled. Idris Malik and James Charlton-Perez steadied matters with an unbroken ninth-wicket stand, adding 12 to push the total to 194, but the late collapse had taken the sting out of a promising position.
Cookham Dean's reply started purposefully as Donald and Matthew Symonds put on 41 for the opening wicket. James Charlton-Perez was the pick of the Sonning attack early on, bowling with excellent control to return 1 for 10 from five overs with two maidens, removing Donald for 16. Mohit Karangad then had Symonds bowled for 27, leaving the visitors 70 for 2.
From there, however, James Milligan and Robert Mettler seized complete control with a blistering third-wicket partnership worth 105 runs. Milligan was elegant in compiling an unbeaten 50 from 43 balls, striking ten fours, while Mettler was the more aggressive of the pair, smashing four sixes and four fours in a rapid 52 from 32 deliveries. Both retired not out with their work done, having effectively won the match for Cookham Dean.
Though Idris Malik picked up a caught-and-bowled opportunity — Moksha Suriarachchi taking the catch to dismiss Rowson for 7 — and Kishan Akula bowled Hadi Mohammed for 8, the damage had already been done. Mark Pateman provided an emphatic finish with an unbeaten 15 from nine balls, hitting three fours to seal a six-wicket victory for the visitors. For Sonning, it was a case of what might have been, with Jones's superb knock ultimately undermined by the late-innings batting collapse that denied them a truly competitive total.
