Match Report

Sonning Fall Short as Kidmore End Chase Down 181 at King George's Field

Sonning won the toss and elected to bat on home soil in this Division 2A encounter, but their decision ultimately proved fruitless as Kidmore End chased down a target of 181 with three wickets in hand and nearly eight overs to spare.

The hosts made a bright start through Connor Wardlaw, who cracked two fours in a rapid 8 from 7 balls before being trapped lbw by Juan Collison with the score on 16. Dhruv Peshkar and Mohammed Zahid steadied the innings with a partnership of 33 for the second wicket, but Craig Palmer's intervention proved decisive in the middle overs. The seamer removed Peshkar for 17 and then had Muhammad Ayub lbw for a golden duck in the same over, reducing Sonning to 49 for 3.

Zahid continued to bat with authority, striking seven fours in an enterprising 35 before adding 46 for the fourth wicket with Zanoxolo Gift Kwatsha. The pair's counter-attacking stand gave the innings much-needed momentum, with Kwatsha particularly aggressive, launching one six among his four boundaries during a brisk 30 from 40 balls. Palmer eventually had Zahid caught by Ben Greenwood, while captain James Frost accounted for Kwatsha, caught by Sanay Sadhwani, and bowled Henry Cook for a duck in quick succession, leaving Sonning reeling at 111 for 6.

Skipper Peter Higginbottom anchored the lower order with an unbeaten 31 from 72 balls, displaying patience and determination. Useful contributions from Indeveer Sahota (15) and Bobby Malik (12) helped Sonning add 69 runs for the final four wickets, with Higginbottom sharing stands of 25 with Sahota and 23 with Malik to push the total to 180 all out in 49.2 overs. Greenwood was the pick of the Kidmore End attack, claiming 3 for 22 from 9.2 overs, while Palmer finished with 3 for 51 and Frost took 2 for 22 from his full allocation of ten overs.

Kidmore End's reply began confidently as openers Olly Dugdale and Ajinkya Gothoskar put on 60 for the first wicket, taking the sting out of the Sonning new-ball attack. Mohammed Zahid bowled tidily, conceding just 11 runs from five overs with three maidens, but could not find a breakthrough. It was Adil Malik who made the first incision, trapping Gothoskar lbw for 18, before Higginbottom bowled Dugdale for 30 to leave the visitors 65 for 2.

Malik then removed Gregor Hearn for a duck to give Sonning genuine hope at 72 for 3, but Jake Leach and Frost combined for a match-defining partnership of 74 for the fourth wicket. Leach was the aggressor, hammering eight fours in a fluent 53 from 54 deliveries, while Frost provided the composed foil at the other end. Bobby Malik eventually broke the stand, having Leach caught by Muhammad Ayub, and when Ella Phillips dismissed both Collison, caught by Adil Malik, and bowled Frost for 29, Kidmore End had wobbled to 158 for 7, still needing 23 to win.

Any hopes of a dramatic Sonning comeback were extinguished by Craig Palmer, who launched three enormous sixes in an unbeaten 19 from just 14 balls. Alongside Greenwood's composed 7 not out, Palmer steered Kidmore End to their target of 186 for 7 in 42.2 overs. Phillips finished with figures of 2 for 34 from her 7.2 overs, while Bobby Malik's 2 for 35 and Adil Malik's 2 for 55 gave the Sonning bowling effort respectability, but the extras column — which featured 12 wides and 8 no-balls amounting to 22 in total — proved costly in a match decided by fine margins.
