Sonning 2nd XI Undone by Wargrave's Batting Masterclass at King George's Field

Wargrave's top order produced a devastating display of strokeplay to post 317 for 6 from their 45 overs before bowling Sonning out for 180 in this Division 4B encounter at King George's Field on Saturday.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Wargrave captain Peter Dean and opening partner Luke Taylor set about the Sonning attack from the outset. The pair put on a commanding 118-run opening stand that laid the platform for what would become a formidable total. Taylor was the more aggressive of the two, striking 11 fours in his 62 from 57 balls before being bowled by Aashmit Ghosh. Dean continued to accumulate, reaching 54 from 60 deliveries with eight boundaries before being caught by wicketkeeper Daniel Edwards off the bowling of Indeveer Sahota.

Louis Dean then took centre stage with a superb knock of 76 from 64 balls, an innings laced with six fours and three sixes. He added 36 with Yuvraj Deshpande for the third wicket before Sahota struck twice in quick succession — removing Deshpande for 23 and Hardik Dhallam for a golden duck in successive deliveries, both caught, to reduce Wargrave briefly to 195 for 4. Dean and Ben Norrington then combined in a fluent 59-run fifth-wicket partnership before Dean finally fell, caught by Sahota off Jack Durrant's bowling.

Norrington ensured there was no late-innings collapse, finishing unbeaten on 52 from just 41 balls, including three fours and two sixes. Ashwyn Rupasinha chipped in with a breezy 19 from 14 balls and Mandip Sohi added an unbeaten 10 from six deliveries as Wargrave plundered 63 runs from the final two partnerships. Sahota was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning excellent figures of 3 for 42 from his nine overs, while the remaining attack proved expensive — Duncan Parr conceding 82 from his nine overs and Durrant going for 71 from nine, including 12 wides.

Chasing 318, Sonning's reply was in immediate trouble. Fin Chisholm removed Duncan Parr for 3 with the score on just 4, and Mandip Sohi then produced a devastating spell to reduce the hosts to 10 for 2, trapping Sahota lbw for a duck. When Mohit Karangad was run out for 2 and Edward McLoughlin followed the same way for 9, Sonning were reeling at 30 for 4 and the contest appeared all but over.

Akash Vasa and Ghosh provided the only sustained resistance of the innings, putting on a gritty 72 for the fifth wicket. Ghosh played with real intent, striking eight fours in his team-high 38 from 57 balls, while Vasa contributed a composed 32 from 45 deliveries with five boundaries. Their partnership hauled Sonning past the 100 mark and briefly gave the home supporters something to cheer, but the required rate had long spiralled beyond reach.

Once Ghosh fell to Hardik Dhallam and Vasa was caught by Louis Dean off Peter Dean's bowling, the remaining resistance was sporadic. Jack Durrant struck four fours in his 18 and Geethika Jyothis dug in for 27 balls for his 6, but Sohi returned to claim a third wicket and Chisholm wrapped up the innings to finish with 2 for 16. A generous 48 extras — including 37 wides from the Wargrave attack — padded the Sonning total, but it was never enough as the hosts were bowled out for 180 in the 42nd over, falling 137 runs short.
