Match Report

Astwood's Magnificent 155 Not Out Powers Sonning to Comprehensive Victory

Sonning 4th XI produced a dominant display at Yateley Manor School on 22nd August, posting a mammoth 322 for 4 from their 40 overs before bowling Yateley out for just 122 to claim a resounding victory in Division 9C of the Thames Valley Cricket League.

After Yateley won the toss and elected to field, Charles Astwood walked to the crease at number one and proceeded to deliver one of the innings of the season. The opener carried his bat throughout the entire 40 overs, finishing unbeaten on a stunning 155 from 126 balls, an innings peppered with 29 fours and a six. It was a masterclass of batting that left the Yateley attack with nowhere to hide.

Sonning lost Alastair Driver early, trapped lbw by Stuart Harris with the score on 23, but Dhiren Panchal joined Astwood and the pair put on 58 for the second wicket. Panchal contributed a useful 26 from 29 balls, striking six fours before being caught by Gerhard Pienaar off the bowling of Caty Salter. When Bharat Rathod fell bowled by Sathya Potharla for 3, Sonning were 98 for 3, but the best was yet to come.

Captain Arun Raghavendra joined Astwood and the fourth-wicket partnership proved devastating. The pair added a remarkable 208 runs together, tearing the Yateley bowling apart from all angles. Raghavendra was sublime in his own right, smashing 86 from 71 deliveries with 17 fours before being caught by Salter off Potharla with the score on 306. Rish Bajpai saw out the remaining overs unbeaten on 7 as Sonning finished on a formidable 322 for 4, with 41 extras underlining Yateley's struggles with the ball. Bertie Henstock's two overs cost 37 runs, while Srikanth Chowdary conceded 56 from his eight overs without taking a wicket.

The chase was never realistic, and Sonning's bowlers ensured there would be no miracle. Pranoy Ramankandath struck twice in the early overs, bowling Salter for 4 and trapping Spencer Fagan lbw for a duck to leave Yateley reeling at 2 for 1. Tyler Fagan offered some resistance with 19 from 25 balls before being caught by Raghavendra off Neel Kumar, and when Hannah Henstock fell caught behind by wicketkeeper Yusuf Malik off Bajpai for 1, Yateley were 37 for 3 and sinking fast.

Srikanth Chowdary provided the most spirited resistance, hitting 25 from 27 balls including four fours and a six, putting on 35 with Bertie Henstock for the fifth wicket. Yateley skipper Jez Daines also battled hard with 21 from 28 balls, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Siddharth Kumar was the most destructive of the Sonning bowlers, claiming 3 for 22 from his five overs, including the key wickets of Chowdary, Henstock and Harris. Kumar complemented the excellent Neel Kumar, who returned outstanding figures of 8-3-15-2, his miserly spell applying constant pressure throughout.

Yateley were eventually bowled out for 122 in 29.2 overs, with Bajpai finishing proceedings by bowling Pienaar for 4 to complete his figures of 2 for 17 from 6.2 overs. Raghavendra contributed with the ball as well, conceding just 5 runs from two overs including a maiden, while also taking three catches in the field to cap a truly outstanding all-round performance. The victory earned Sonning a full 22 league points, with the margin of 200 runs reflecting their total superiority on the day.
