Sonning Fall Short Despite Strong Top-Order Display as Wokingham Claim Victory at King George's Field

Sonning captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to field in this Division 2A encounter against Wokingham, but his side ultimately fell 35 runs short in a chase of 245, as the visitors secured a deserved win at King George's Field on Saturday.

Wokingham's innings was built around a classy 55 from Moiz Rana, who struck six fours and a six from 57 deliveries to anchor the middle overs. After openers Anthony Clapham (32 off 36) and Hanson Martin (9) had put on 54 for the first wicket, Sonning's bowlers dragged things back superbly. Higginbottom struck twice in quick succession, bowling Mushtafa Mushafa for 9 and trapping Nabeel Janed lbw for a golden duck, reducing Wokingham to 77 for 4. Rana, however, found willing partners in Billy Rogers (23) and Mac Dsouza (43), sharing stands of 56 and 59 for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively, pushing the total past 190 before Zanoxolo Gift Kwatsha had him caught behind by Connor Wardlaw.

Kwatsha was the pick of the Sonning attack, finishing with outstanding figures of 4-40 from his ten overs, including the key scalps of Martin, Rana, Jacob Clark and captain Jarrett Bobb — the latter caught off his own bowling. Bobby Malik was equally economical, returning 2-19 from 8.2 overs with a maiden as he cleaned up the tail, stumping Dsouza via Wardlaw and having Hunter Pogson caught by Muhammad Ayub. Ella Phillips chipped in with 2-51, removing the dangerous Clapham and Rogers. The extras column, however, told a damaging story for Sonning: 43 in total, including 37 wides, with Higginbottom conceding 16 wides and Adil Malik 12 from just five overs.

Sonning's reply began brightly as Wardlaw attacked from the outset, smashing eight fours in a blistering 38 from only 25 balls. His opening stand of 48 with Higginbottom set the tone, and when Wardlaw fell caught by Jarrett Bobb off Hunter Pogson, the home side looked well placed. Higginbottom and Kwatsha then took control with a magnificent second-wicket partnership of 80. Higginbottom batted with patience and composure, mixing six fours and a six in his 38 from 76 balls, while Kwatsha was the more aggressive, blazing six fours and two sixes in a fluent 49 from 54 deliveries.

At 128 for 1, Sonning appeared to be cruising towards their target. Then Anthony Clapham intervened. The Wokingham all-rounder, who had already contributed 32 with the bat, produced a devastating spell of spin bowling that ripped through the Sonning middle order. He removed Higginbottom caught by Dsouza, then had Ayub caught by the same fielder for a first-ball duck in the same over to make it 128 for 3. When Kwatsha fell one short of a deserved half-century, also to Clapham, the complexion of the match shifted dramatically.

From 142 for 4, Sonning's challenge disintegrated. Ryan Pogson applied further pressure with 3-35 from his full allocation of ten overs, dismissing Indeveer Sahota (12), Dhruv Peshkar (7) and Daniel Longridge (0) as wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Clapham continued his remarkable spell, finishing with 5-30 from ten overs as he accounted for Raja Shahroz Khan and Adil Malik. Bobby Malik offered some late resistance with a spirited 20 from 31 balls, including a six, and shared a last-wicket stand of 21 with Phillips (8 not out), but the damage was done. Sonning were bowled out for 209 in 43.5 overs.

Dsouza was outstanding behind the stumps for Wokingham, taking five catches in the second innings to complement his 43 with the bat, while Clapham's match-defining five-wicket haul proved the difference between the sides. Sonning collected 11 bonus points from the contest — six batting and five bowling — but it was Wokingham who left King George's Field with the 22-point victory.
