Match Report

Sonning's Strong Batting Display Goes Unrewarded as Rain Claims Falkland Friendly

Sonning 1st XI posted a competitive 190 for 9 in their 37.5 overs after being inserted by Falkland at the Enborne Lodge Ground on 2nd May, but the match was ultimately abandoned with the hosts racing towards their target at 100 for 2 from just 13.1 overs.

Captain Peter Higginbottom won nothing at the toss, with Falkland skipper James Bird electing to bowl first, but Sonning's top order made the hosts pay for that decision. Higginbottom himself opened the batting alongside wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar, and the pair put on 35 for the first wicket before the skipper fell lbw to Soorya Anbumurasoli for 15 from 43 balls, having laid a patient platform.

Peshkar and Mohammed Zahid then constructed the innings' most significant partnership, adding 70 for the second wicket. Peshkar was the more fluent of the two, reaching his half-century in 51 balls with nine boundaries before being run out by Henry Reeves for 52. Zahid continued in aggressive fashion at the other end, striking six fours and a six in his 49 from 46 deliveries before Reeves bowled him to end a dangerous stay at the crease, with the score on 155 for 3.

Amaad Ali ensured the momentum did not stall, smashing 34 from just 28 balls in a blistering cameo that included four fours and two sixes. His third-wicket stand with Zahid was worth 50 runs in only 33 balls, taking Sonning past 150 inside 27 overs. Ali was eventually caught by Theo Smith off the bowling of Bird for 34, triggering a dramatic collapse that saw Sonning lose six wickets for just 17 runs.

Bird was the chief architect of that lower-order implosion, claiming 3 for 45 from his eight overs, including the wickets of Piyanshu Desai and Damario Goodman in quick succession. James Higgins was miserly at the other end, finishing with 1 for 17 from 7.5 overs with two maidens, while Reeves picked up 2 for 23 from his eight-over spell. Saranjeet Singh remained unbeaten on 5 as the Sonning innings drew to a close.

The Falkland reply was dominated by one man. Bird, having already taken three wickets with the ball, strode out to open and played an extraordinary innings of 70 not out from just 42 balls, lacing eleven fours and a six. Higginbottom claimed the only early breakthrough for Sonning, having Chris Baker caught by Zahid for 11 with the score on 30. That merely brought Charlie Mabbatt to the crease, and Bird took control of their second-wicket partnership of 70, during which he raced to his fifty in 31 balls. Mabbatt contributed 14 before being caught by Zahid off the bowling of Saranjeet Singh.

At 100 for 2 from 13.1 overs, Falkland were well ahead of the required rate and looked certainties to chase down the target. However, the weather intervened and the match was abandoned, denying both sides a definitive result. For Sonning, it was a frustrating outcome given the quality of their batting in the first innings, though the bowlers had struggled to contain Bird's onslaught, conceding runs at nearly eight an over across the five bowlers used.
