Sahota's Classy 61 Not Enough as Sonning 2nd XI Fall to High Wycombe Run Chase

Sonning 2nd XI's total of 192 all out proved insufficient as High Wycombe 3rd XI chased down their target with remarkable ease, reaching 195 for 3 in just 23.2 overs at Princes Risborough Cricket Club in this Division 4B encounter on Saturday.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sonning made a steady start through openers David Coutts and Gaurav Jayan, who put on 44 for the first wicket. Coutts was the more circumspect of the pair, managing just 4 from 36 balls before falling caught behind off Yousaf Sarwar. Jayan looked in good touch, striking six fours in his 30 from 41 deliveries, but he too fell to Sarwar shortly after, caught by Harikrishnan Balakrishnan with the score on 65.

Akash Vasa contributed a brisk 10 before becoming wicketkeeper J Foxley's second catch, this time off Ben Hoggan, and at 75 for 3, Sonning needed a partnership. Indeveer Sahota provided it emphatically. The number four batsman played the innings of the day, compiling a fluent 61 from 63 balls laced with twelve fours. He added 53 with Mohit Karangad for the fourth wicket and a further 27 with captain Raoul Harding for the fifth, dragging Sonning past 150.

Harding played an entertaining cameo of 23 from just 21 balls, clearing the boundary three times before being bowled by F A Witcher. Once Sahota departed for his excellent 61, caught by skipper A J Higgins off Chris Russell with the score on 174, the lower order crumbled. Russell proved devastating at the death, claiming 3 for 11 from his 6.1 overs as Sonning lost their last four wickets for just 18 runs. High Wycombe's extras tally of 33 — including a remarkable 17 wides from Ayuub Khan alone — had padded the Sonning total considerably.

The reply from High Wycombe was devastating in its efficiency. Openers Chris Russell and Harikrishnan Balakrishnan tore into the Sonning attack from the outset, putting on 92 for the first wicket at nearly eight runs per over. Balakrishnan was the chief aggressor, smashing 72 from just 31 balls with twelve fours and three sixes in a blistering display of hitting. Jack Durrant eventually had him caught by Gaurav Jayan, but by then the damage was well and truly done.

Russell continued to anchor the chase, adding 35 with captain Higgins before Wasim Amin had the skipper caught by Kavya Panchal for 17. Amin also accounted for Russell, caught by Akash Vasa for a well-constructed 34 from 39 balls, to finish with figures of 2 for 59 from his eight overs — the only Sonning bowler to take multiple wickets. The hosts' bowling attack struggled for control throughout, conceding 22 wides in the second innings, with Durrant alone sending down ten.

O U Sarwar, unbeaten on 32 from 35 balls, and J Foxley, who struck a rapid 16 from 10 deliveries including two sixes, saw the hosts home with more than 21 overs to spare. The comprehensive seven-wicket victory highlighted the gulf between the sides on the day, with High Wycombe's explosive top order rendering Sonning's competitive first-innings total entirely inadequate.
