Match Report

Sonning Women Secure Victory at King George's Field Despite Falling Short of Target

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a win against Wokingham in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture at King George's Field on 24th May, in a pairs format contest that saw both sides battle through 16 overs apiece.

Captain Katie Barrows won the toss and opted to put Wokingham in to bat, a decision that allowed her bowlers first use of the conditions. Wokingham's innings was built around a brisk knock from skipper Michaela Evans, who top-scored with 20 off just 13 deliveries, striking three boundaries in an assured display from the number seven position. Leanne Freeth contributed 14 off 12 balls, also finding the rope three times, while Emily West added a useful 12 from 13 balls to help Wokingham post 100 for 6 from their 16 overs.

Extras played a significant role in inflating Wokingham's total, with 36 additional runs conceded — 30 of which came from wides. Sonning's bowlers struggled at times with their line, though they were rewarded with regular wickets. Belle Myers was the pick of the attack, claiming 2 for 25 from her four overs, while Kira Knight matched her with 2 for 22 from three overs, albeit conceding four wides and two no-balls. Michaela Herrett bowled tidily for her 1 for 16 from three overs without conceding a single wide, and Katie Barrows chipped in with 1 for 10 from two overs.

In reply, Sonning's chase of 101 proved a tough ask. The top order found runs hard to come by, with openers Elinor Longridge (5 off 12) and Hannah Brooks (4 off 12) unable to build momentum. Sarah Wonham managed just 3 before being dismissed, and the innings stuttered at the halfway stage with wickets falling at inopportune moments.

It was left to the lower order to inject urgency into the run chase. Belle Myers produced a superb all-round performance, following up her bowling exploits with a team-high 22 off 20 balls, cracking four boundaries in an innings that gave Sonning genuine hope. Michaela Herrett complemented Myers well with a punchy 10 off just 8 deliveries, finding two fours, while captain Barrows ground out 13 from 16 balls to provide valuable resistance in the middle order.

Despite these efforts, Sonning finished on 89 for 3 from their 16 overs, 11 runs short of Wokingham's total. However, under the pairs format scoring system — which started both sides on 200 and applied a five-run penalty per dismissal — Sonning's fewer dismissals proved decisive. Wokingham lost six wickets to Sonning's three, meaning the penalty differential swung the result firmly in the home side's favour.

Wokingham's bowlers had their moments, with Iris Pritchard and Maisie Dowse each claiming a wicket, but both sides were guilty of profligate bowling, with Wokingham conceding 23 wides of their own. Poppy Pritchard's two overs proved particularly expensive, leaking 20 runs including nine wides. The result earned Sonning six league points to Wokingham's one, a deserved reward for a disciplined bowling performance that ultimately won them the match.
