Match Report
Sonning 3rd XI Outgunned by Fleet's Dominant Batting Display at Calthorpe Park
Sonning 3rd XI travelled to Calthorpe Park on 8th August for a Division 7A encounter against Fleet and were left chasing a daunting total after the hosts piled on 276 for 9 from their 45 overs. Captain Sam Taylor's side fought hard with the ball in patches but were ultimately unable to contain Fleet's middle-order assault, before a batting collapse saw them bowled out for 112 in reply.
Fleet captain Dan Heath won the toss and chose to bat, a decision that proved decisive. After Wasim Amin removed Ryan Hayward early, caught with just 4 runs on the board, openers Josh Otter and Swaroop Panigrahi steadied the ship with a crucial second-wicket partnership of 76. Otter contributed 24 from 49 balls before being bowled by Mohit Karangad, but it was Panigrahi who proved the real thorn in Sonning's side.
Panigrahi batted with authority throughout, striking 10 fours and 2 sixes in a superb innings of 73 from 88 deliveries. He and Ben Steel then combined for an even more damaging third-wicket stand of 77, which effectively wrestled the match away from Sonning. Steel himself was excellent, compiling 48 from 63 balls with six boundaries and a six before being caught behind by Taylor off the bowling of Ethan Towner.
Towner was Sonning's standout performer with the ball, claiming 4 for 48 from his six overs, including the key scalps of Panigrahi, Steel, skipper Heath (16), and Anton Van Der Hoven (10). Tom Wolfenden chipped in with 2 for 33 from seven tidy overs, while Karangad and Kabir Dave each took a wicket apiece. However, 48 extras — including 31 wides — added significantly to Fleet's total and proved costly, with the Sonning attack struggling for consistency at times.
Chasing 277 to win, Sonning's reply began promisingly. Rahul Sood and George Rothermel put on an opening partnership of 52, the best stand of the innings. Rothermel was the more aggressive of the two, striking five fours in a brisk 24 from 26 balls before being caught by Reyaansh Kanchan off Dhvanil Karia. Sood followed shortly after for 21, also falling to Karia, and the wheels began to come off.
Shreyas Koppole made a quickfire 7 before being caught by wicketkeeper Neil Morris off Karia, who finished with impressive figures of 3 for 38 from his nine overs. Akash Vasa offered some resistance with 16 from 31 balls, and Christopher Dowse added 10, but once they fell in quick succession — with the score moving from 73 for 3 to 91 for 5 — the writing was on the wall. Fleet captain Heath then delivered a devastating spell of 3 for 10 from four overs, including a maiden, removing Vasa, Taylor for a duck, and Towner for nought in a passage of play that effectively sealed the contest.
From 91 for 4, Sonning lost their last six wickets for just 21 runs, with Kanchan (2-13) and Josh Otter (1-4) also contributing with the ball. Mohit Karangad remained unbeaten on 4 as the last man standing, but Tom Wolfenden's dismissal — caught by Ryan Hayward off Matthew McLauchlan — brought the innings to a close at 112 all out in the 28th over. Fleet ran out comfortable winners, claiming the full 22 league points while Sonning took away 6 bonus points as consolation from a chastening afternoon in Hampshire.
