Sharks Dominate Wargrave with Commanding All-Round Display
Sonning U11 Sharks produced a comprehensive victory over Wargrave Under 11 Wombats in the U11 T16 Pairs North East league fixture on 11th June 2023, winning the toss, electing to bat, and posting a total that proved well beyond their hosts' reach.
Muhammad Shah led the way with the bat for the Sharks, striking a fluent 23 from 26 balls, an innings laced with three boundaries that set the tone from the outset. Yusuf Malik was equally impressive at the other end of the opening pair, contributing 19 off 22 deliveries with three fours of his own. The pair gave Sonning a flying start and ensured the scoreboard ticked over at a healthy rate throughout the early overs.
Ishan Jithendriya added a useful 8 from 13 balls in the middle order, while contributions from Lewis Flanigan (3), William Butterfield (3), Elias Haidari (3), Idris Malik (2) and Satvick Iyengar (2) kept the runs flowing. With a substantial 46 extras — including 35 wides — the Sharks posted 109 for 5 from their 20 overs. Wargrave's Cooper Banham was the pick of the home bowlers, delivering an impressive spell of 2-5 from two overs including a maiden, while Samuel Forsaith claimed two wickets for six runs.
Faced with a stiff target, Wargrave's reply never truly gathered momentum. Captain Cooper Banham top-scored with 14 from 16 balls, but wickets fell at regular intervals as the Sharks' bowling attack proved relentless. Leo Helsby (12 off 13 balls) and Samuel Forsaith (10 off 11) offered some late resistance with the bat, but it was too little, too late.
The Sharks' bowling unit was outstanding in its discipline and variety. Idris Malik delivered a superb spell of 3-4 from two overs, while William Butterfield matched him with figures of 3-4 from two overs, including a maiden. Yusuf Malik also proved devastating with the ball, claiming 2-4 from his single over. Captain Monty Thomas chipped in with 2-13 from three overs, and Lewis Flanigan, Charlie Bright and Ishan Jithendriya each claimed a wicket apiece to ensure every Wargrave pair was put under pressure.
A special mention must go to Elias Haidari, who bowled two consecutive maiden overs conceding no runs — a remarkable feat of accuracy and control at this age group. His figures of 0-0 from two overs applied a stranglehold on the Wargrave batting that the home side never escaped.
Wargrave were eventually restricted to 87 for 18 from their 20 overs, handing the Sharks a thoroughly deserved 22-run victory. It was a clinical performance from Sonning, who demonstrated quality in all departments, with ten bowlers used and eight batters making contributions with the bat.
