Match Report
Sonning 2nds Fall Short Despite Jones Fireworks at Coney Green
Sonning 2nd XI's 250 for seven proved insufficient as Hillingdon Manor chased down the target with six wickets in hand at Coney Green on 9th May, a result that will frustrate captain Dan Anderson's side after they had appeared well-placed at the halfway stage of this Division 4B encounter.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, Sonning's innings got off to a shaky start when David Coutts was trapped lbw by Simon Webb for just five with only 12 on the board. Duncan Parr, however, proved the anchor the visitors needed. The experienced batsman settled in for a patient knock of 48 from 100 balls, laced with seven boundaries, and was central to the rebuilding effort. His second-wicket partnership of 43 with Anderson steadied the ship before the skipper fell bowled by Muhammad Ali Saleem for 21.
The pivotal stand of the Sonning innings came between Parr and Raoul Harding, who added 63 for the third wicket. Harding struck the ball with real authority, racing to 36 from 35 deliveries with five fours and a six before Joshua Frost pinned him lbw. Parr continued his vigil but was eventually bowled by Faizan Asif for 48, leaving Sonning at 153 for four.
Robert Jones then seized control with a magnificent innings of 63 from just 50 balls, hammering ten fours and a six in an exhibition of clean hitting. His partnership of 78 with Gaurav Jayan for the sixth wicket propelled Sonning past 200 and into what looked like a commanding position. Jones was eventually caught by Hamza Shahid off the bowler's own bowling, but Jayan remained unbeaten on 25 from 21 balls to help Sonning to a competitive total. The Hillingdon Manor bowling attack was generous with extras, conceding 42 in total, including 27 wides, with Muhammad Ali Saleem's eight overs costing 75 runs despite claiming two wickets.
The home side's reply was built around a superb second-wicket partnership of 129 between Rohanvir Sidhu and Amar Lal. After Rob Alexander had fallen for 13 — caught by Anderson off Jack Durrant — Sidhu and Lal batted with increasing assurance to take the game away from Sonning. Sidhu compiled a composed 72 from 114 balls with ten fours, while Lal contributed an accomplished 45 from 61 deliveries before being caught by Harding off Anderson's bowling.
When Sidhu was run out by Gaurav Jayan with the score on 181, Sonning sensed an opportunity, but Hamza Shahid extinguished any hopes of a comeback with a blistering 51 from just 35 balls, finding the boundary ten times. Duncan Parr eventually had him lbw, but by then the damage was done. Moazzam Sultan, unbeaten on 23, and Simon Webb, 13 not out, knocked off the remaining runs with ease as Hillingdon Manor reached 253 for four in 43.4 overs.
Sonning's bowling attack struggled for consistency, with seven bowlers used and 26 wides conceded. Ghulam Abbas was the most economical, his nine overs costing just 24 runs, but he was unable to claim a wicket. Anderson and Parr each picked up a scalp, but the lack of penetration at crucial moments allowed Hillingdon Manor to control the chase from the moment Sidhu and Lal came together. It was a defeat that will sting, particularly given the platform Jones and company had built in the first innings.
