Falcons Soar to Victory as Bowling Unit Dismantles Cookham Dean
Sonning U9 Falcons secured a convincing win over Cookham Dean Under 9 Kites in their U9 Super 8s North East league fixture at Reading Blue Coat School's Ali's Pond Pitch on 14 May 2023. After being asked to bat first following Cookham Dean's decision to field at the toss, the Falcons posted 118 from their 18 overs before restricting the visitors to 91, a margin of 27 runs that reflected Sonning's superiority in both departments.
The Falcons' first innings was built around contributions across the order, with Alexander Hatchett-Walker leading the way with a composed 14 from 18 balls, including the innings' sole boundary off the bat. Captain Arthur Teed provided useful support at the top of the order, accumulating 8 runs from 25 deliveries, while Heet Panchal chipped in with 7 from 14 balls further down. Alexander Green added a brisk 5 from just 9 balls towards the end of the innings to bolster the total.
A significant factor in Sonning's first-innings score was the 87 extras conceded by the Cookham Dean bowlers, with 83 of those coming in wides. Edward Nye's three overs proved particularly costly, leaking 27 runs with 23 wides, while Dylan Johnson conceded 17 from his three overs including 14 wides. Rohan Birk was the pick of the visiting attack, delivering an impressive spell of 2-3 from two overs without conceding a single wide, and also claiming three wickets to trouble the Sonning batting order.
In reply, Cookham Dean's run chase never truly gained momentum against a disciplined Sonning bowling attack. The visitors found runs hard to come by, with most batters struggling to score freely. William Veale was the lone exception, striking a defiant 16 from 13 balls, an innings that included two fours and an impressive six — the only maximum of the entire match. His counter-attacking effort briefly lifted Cookham Dean's hopes but found insufficient support from the other end.
Alexander Green was the standout performer with the ball for the Falcons, returning outstanding figures of 3-8 from three overs without bowling a single wide or no-ball. His accuracy and ability to take wickets at regular intervals proved decisive in stifling the Cookham Dean chase. Heet Panchal complemented Green superbly, picking up 2-4 from his two overs and maintaining excellent control throughout his spell.
Aryaansh Rawat set the tone early with the new ball, conceding just a single run from his two overs and bowling a maiden — a remarkable feat at this age group. Alex McDonald was equally parsimonious, finishing with figures of 0-3 from two overs, including a maiden of his own. Alexander Hatchett-Walker rounded off an impressive all-round display with 1-3 from his two overs, ensuring constant pressure on the Cookham Dean batters.
Arthur Teed and Daniel Gomez each claimed a wicket apiece to ensure all ten Sonning bowlers were involved in the attack, with the team sharing 11 wickets across the innings. Angus Bowler, Cookham Dean's captain and wicketkeeper, endured a difficult time with the bat, managing just 1 from 14 balls while being dismissed four times in the pairs format. The Falcons' collective discipline with the ball, conceding 58 extras compared to the 87 they benefited from in the first innings, ultimately proved the difference in a deserved home victory.
