Scorchers Rally From Early Collapse to Claim Victory at Sonning Lane
Sonning U13 Scorchers produced a remarkable recovery from 4 for 3 to post 131 for 6 and then defended the total with discipline, defeating Reading Under 13 Lions by 19 runs in the BYCL Under 13 Blast North West fixture on 16 July at Sonning Lane.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Scorchers endured a torrid start against Reading's opening attack. Aristo Voltaire was outstanding with the new ball, bowling two maiden overs and removing both Charlie Bright, caught for a duck, and Finley Andrews, bowled for nought, to leave the visitors reeling. Avyukt Bagga then had Saurav Sivaram bowled for a duck, and at 4 for 3 the Scorchers' innings appeared to be in serious trouble.
Tejus Maddi walked to the crease with his side in crisis and responded with composure and authority. In partnership first with captain Jamie Dollinger, Maddi helped stabilise the innings before a crucial stand with Namit Desai yielded 63 runs for the fourth wicket — the decisive partnership of the match. Maddi struck three fours in a well-constructed 24 from 25 balls before retiring not out, while Dollinger contributed a steady 15 from 25 deliveries, including one boundary, before he too retired.
The late order continued the momentum. After Desai fell bowled by Vidhu Tripathi for 8, and Archie Jansen (6) and Henry Bright (3) were dismissed by Hafsa Siddiqui and Angad Dosanjh respectively, Oliver Barker and Frederick Parkes ensured the Scorchers finished strongly. Their unbroken partnership added 51 runs from the final overs, with Parkes striking three fours in a brisk 19 from 16 balls and Barker contributing 16 from 19 deliveries. A generous 40 extras from the Reading attack, including 18 wides and 16 byes, further boosted the total to a competitive 131 for 6.
Reading's reply started promisingly as Sharvil Jadav cracked a four before being run out by Dollinger for 5, one of two run outs that underlined the Scorchers' sharp fielding. Namit Desai proved as effective with the ball as he had been with the bat, producing a superb spell of 2 for 2 from his two overs, removing both Voltaire and Vaidhya Kumar — the latter bowled first ball — to leave Reading 18 for 3.
Captain Gautam Singh led Reading's fightback with the top score of 23 from 25 balls, finding three boundaries, while Muhammad Abdul Rafay Saroya batted patiently for 11 from 25 deliveries before retiring. A 66-run fourth-wicket stand steadied the home side's chase, but Reading always trailed the required rate. Henry Bright then intervened decisively with the ball, claiming 3 for 8 from three overs including the key wickets of Kapish Sharma, bowled for 1, Hafsa Siddiqui caught by Barker for nought, and Angad Dosanjh bowled for 5, to break the back of Reading's middle order.
Finley Andrews and Tejus Maddi each bowled tidy three-over spells — Andrews returning figures of 0 for 7 with a maiden, and Maddi conceding just 10 runs with a maiden of his own — to ensure the pressure never relented. Oliver Barker completed a fine all-round display with a sharp run out of Indrajit Nandakumar as Reading's innings closed on 112 for 7, falling 19 runs short of the target. Despite 48 extras in the Sonning bowling effort, the Scorchers' ability to take regular wickets at critical moments proved the difference on the night.
