Sonning Women Fall Short as Maidenhead & Bray Chase Down 91 at King George's Field
Sonning Women's 1st XI suffered defeat at home on Sunday as Maidenhead & Bray overhauled their total of 91 with relative comfort, reaching 110 for 3 in this Super 8 Development Group 4 encounter at King George's Field. After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Sonning posted a competitive score but were ultimately unable to defend it, with extras proving costly in the second innings.
Batting first, Sonning's innings was built on contributions throughout the order rather than one standout knock. Opener Elinor Longridge struck a brisk 8 from just 4 balls, including a boundary, to get the innings off to a positive start, while Rebecca Malhi added 10 from 17 deliveries at the top. Elizabeth Van Deventer chipped in with 7 off 8 balls, but it was Geethika Jyothis who provided the real impetus lower down the order with a fluent 17 from 11 balls, striking three fours in an innings that gave the total much-needed substance.
Chloe Bailey contributed a useful 8 from 13 balls batting at number eight, while Nic Blunden made 7 from 13 deliveries. Captain Michaela Herrett and wicketkeeper Sarah Wonham each added 4, meaning runs were shared around but no batter was able to truly take the game away from the opposition. Sonning finished on 91 for 1 from their 16 overs, boosted by 26 extras — 22 of which were wides.
Tilly Lawrence was the pick of the Maidenhead & Bray bowlers, returning figures of 4-1-12-1 in a disciplined spell that included a maiden over. Tilly Stearns was similarly economical, conceding just 10 runs from her three overs without taking a wicket. At the other end, Riya Srinivas and Mariam Laeeq each went for 21 from their three overs, with a combined 15 wides between them offering Sonning easy runs.
The chase began positively for Maidenhead & Bray, with Riya Srinivas striking 12 from just 7 balls at the top of the order, including two boundaries. Emily Bradshaw continued the momentum with 16 off 17 balls, hitting three fours before being dismissed. Captain Michelle Jeyarajah proved the match-winner with an authoritative 19 from 13 deliveries, lacing four boundaries to keep the scoring rate well above what was required.
Elizabeth Van Deventer was Sonning's most effective bowler, claiming 2 for 14 from her three overs to give the home side hope. Captain Herrett also picked up a wicket, finishing with 1 for 26 from her four overs. Geethika Jyothis bowled tidily, conceding 22 from four overs with a maiden, but was unable to find a breakthrough.
However, Sonning's bowlers were undermined by a high extras tally of their own, conceding 30 extras in the second innings — 26 of which were wides. Nic Blunden's single over cost 8 runs, with 6 of those coming from wides, while Rebecca Malhi went for 20 from two overs including 4 wides and 2 no-balls. Chloe Bailey similarly struggled for accuracy, leaking 18 runs from two overs with 6 wides. Tilly Stearns added an unbeaten 12 from 13 balls in the lower order to put the result beyond doubt, as Maidenhead & Bray reached their target with comfort to spare, collecting 6 league points to Sonning's 1.
