Match Report

Phillips and Green Power Sonning to Commanding Victory Over Sulhamstead & Ufton

Sonning Women's 1st XI posted an imposing 195 for 3 from their 25 overs before holding off a spirited Sulhamstead & Ufton reply of 179 for 6 to claim a 16-run victory in this Division 3 A encounter at King George's Field on Sunday.

Asked to bat first after Sulhamstead & Ufton captain Megan Forth won the toss and elected to field, Sonning suffered an early setback when Geethika Jyothis was run out for 2 with the score on just 14. What followed, however, was a batting masterclass. Rita Green and Ella Phillips combined for a stunning second-wicket partnership of 162 runs that tore the opposition attack apart and laid the foundation for a formidable total.

Green was outstanding at the top of the order, striking 68 from 81 balls with eight fours in a patient yet productive innings that anchored the partnership. Phillips, batting at number three, was even more destructive, plundering 14 boundaries in an unbeaten 84 from just 61 deliveries. The pair batted with authority against an eight-strong bowling attack, with none of the Sulhamstead & Ufton bowlers able to stem the flow of runs. Milla Morgan was the pick of the visiting bowlers, claiming the sole wicket to fall to a bowler when she had Sophie Parker bowled for 6, and finishing with figures of 1 for 24 from her five overs.

Green was eventually run out with the score on 176, but by then the damage was well and truly done. A generous 35 extras, including 22 wides, further boosted the Sonning total as the home side ended their innings in commanding fashion.

Sulhamstead & Ufton's reply got off to a flying start courtesy of an opening partnership worth 105 between captain Forth and Khadeeja Waqar. Forth was the aggressor, smashing eight fours in a brisk 43 from 43 balls, while Waqar contributed 35 from 43 deliveries with six boundaries of her own. The pair threatened to overhaul the target with ease before Sophie Parker provided the crucial breakthrough, bowling Forth to break the stand.

Parker struck again almost immediately, trapping Annabel Jones lbw for 4 to leave Sulhamstead & Ufton 124 for 2. Ashleigh Muttitt kept the visitors in the hunt with a rapid 34 from 29 balls, but her dismissal — caught by Rebecca Malhi off Katie Barrows — triggered a collapse that saw three wickets fall for just six runs. From 133 for 3, the chase suddenly looked a tall order.

Geethika Jyothis proved pivotal with the ball, returning excellent figures of 2 for 21 from four overs as she removed both Milla Morgan and Lolly Macdonald to further tighten Sonning's grip. Despite Morgan's resistance with a battling 20, the required rate climbed beyond reach. Captain Grace Phillips rotated her eight bowlers intelligently, with Ella Phillips particularly economical in returning 0 for 18 from four overs including a maiden. Sulhamstead & Ufton ultimately fell 16 runs short, finishing on 179 for 6 as Sonning collected 25 league points from a hard-fought victory.
